I am planning to take my son on croaker run, I think that's the best time for 8yr old start to learn fishing. I planned 9/29 daytime on TCD, any suggestion?
He is not even good on casting yet.
Been a long time since we have seen a true "RUN" ... with that being said ... we caught 2 or 3 "Golden Croakers" Saturday .... it's been a long time seeing a golden croaker ... and we caught more than one ... all released
Eh I haven't seen a true run in a few years. We used to slaughter them along Dollar Flats working a cheater jig from H&H across the sand. I've been catching a few lately but nothing worth taking home.
Back in the '50s the Golden Croaker Run was famous at Rollover Pass.. Traditionally on Labor Day...shoulder to shoulder fishermen.. seen whole pickup beds FULL of croakers in those days... Been a long time, though...
Yea my first saltwater fishing was at Rollover for the croaker run. Those were the days. When my dad would take me there with the othe 500 or more people.
I went last year about this time and got a handfull of decent sized croaker and a pretty nice whiting (as well as a couple of flounder). This year seems like it may be better.
At rollover try the west gulf side of the pass close to the bridge. Throw a piece of fresh dead shrimp right in the middle on an outgoing tide. The middle of pass on the bay side close to the bridge can also be good for big croaker.
I caught two in Matagorda East bay on the Sunday before Laborday. Both over 16 one pushed 20. Biggest croaker I have ever seen much less caught.
