Smoking Cruise De-Activation Switch

I have a 2000 Super Duty and came home from Orlando on Sunday. It had been parked at my office since Wednesday. I got in it and started driving home and 1 block into it I started having a lot of white smoke from under the hood. I pulled into a Chevron station and opened the hood and noticed that a piece that attched to the bottom of the Master Cylinder was the culprit. I had it towed to my local guy and come to find out he said it was the cruise control deactivation switch. He went ahead and replaced it and I went on my way. I now have learned that there was a re-call on the parts. But not on my particular VIN number. So whats the best way to go about getting the new parts installed when they come out in April? Do you think they will broaden the re-call to include my truck? If I had left it on I feel certain it would have burned to ground. Thanks for your help.

Snapman,

Which size motor do you have in your Superduty?

Stuart 02-09-2005 01:03 PM

Uh, Ford stopped making the Bronco in 98 I believe. And a 2000 Ford Falcon?

CaptBill 02-09-2005 01:09 PM

We have a 2001 F350 crewcab superduty dually 4x4 XLT Lariat. Motor: 7.3 L Powerstroke .. Just to be safe CB is unplugging and going to get the new part and installing himself..
I have called and called and our series isn't suppose to be on the list of recalls. But, the guy told us if we were worried we could unplug it ourselves and when the part comes out {April** go to the dealer and the new one will around 15.00 or so. He also said it is better to be safe than sorry whatever that means !!! Does this help...
number to call for recalls is..
1-800-392-3673

I have the 7.3 Diesel. My hope is that they add me to the re-call so I can get it replaced with a new soft switch and get reimbured for my $210 spent on the towing and labor.

CaptBill 02-09-2005 02:09 PM

After I posted I looked up Duh I am having a really bad day..
Sorry,
Lynn

I would call Ford and keep all your paperwork you have.. Call a dealership because i didn't find our VIN either in the recall neither did the guy but, our truck came from the kentucky plant where the excursion came out of if you have the conversion sticker from that plant I would unplug.. But, like most women i freak over this stuff.. Just call the dealer and they should be able to tell you when they will have the part replacement.. If they do put us on the recall the part will be free if not it is around 15.00 bucks!
They probably won't recall out loud about the 350's think of how many of those alone they have sold.... According to the one i spoke too this could be all model fords not just a particular group of vehicle's. And yes you were lucky to notice it thank goodness you are ok..
I would go as far to say if you have a 350 to go ahead and disconnect like they guy said better to be safe than sorry.. and then just replace it and have a great day afterwards..

Capn Bill

Unplug the new one you got and buy one of the newer ones coming out in April. I hope they are better than the old ones. I caint seen to get through to everyone that the same switch has been used on lots of Fords since 1992 thru 2002. Really need to broaden the recall.

I haven't heard or seen anywhere about the Mecury Mountaineer. It is just a smaller Navigator

CHARLIE 02-09-2005 04:09 PM

Bobby

Look right on top of your master cylinder if it has a little round screw in type device with two wires plugged in to the top of it its the same. I bet they are the same. What year ?

Charlie

Bobby 02-09-2005 04:12 PM

2001

CHARLIE 02-09-2005 04:27 PM

Did you look on top of your master cylinder ?

Charlie

Bobby 02-09-2005 04:31 PM

yes it has it and it is red.

CHARLIE 02-09-2005 04:39 PM

Well probably has a little metal band around it in the middle too. Sounds just like all the other ones. Un plug it and wait until the new ones come out in April i think that is when they said.

Bobby 02-09-2005 04:43 PM

It looks just like the one on my '92 ford pickup. And I wished that truck would burn up

CHARLIE 02-09-2005 04:55 PM

Bobby

Yep same since 1992 thru 2002 many different types of vehicles too. Good luck.

For our update here .. We ended up calling Charlie and might add a really nice man..
Guy's it seems we were close! There was fluid already on our part when Bill found it and did the unplug.. So it seems we should have a recall on these also..
Now is the time to go out and check your 350 ..

Ours was right off the master cylinder pointed towards the engine.. If you need call call him.. 713-649-0757...
It was tough to actually find..

I wish I would have taken a picture of this part smoking. I am trying to get a picture of the part we pulled out of my truck. It is really not easy to tell what it is, it is charred black piece of plastic.

Isn't this the cruise control disconnect switch? I just unplugged mine and was wondering if it disables the cruise control or just the disconnect when you apply the brakes. If it doesn't disable the cruise control, that could be dangerous!

CHARLIE 02-14-2005 10:41 PM

Disables cruise control. Nr one it removes the voltage from the switch so it wont burn.
