If some of you don't know, I took a new job that did not like my hair. I will say that when I had 2 meetings with the boss I had my hair in a pony tail. They liked me but told me the hair must go :( I did what I said and donated my locks. I still wear patchouli oil LOL. It's colder now and I miss my hair. Now I just use a lot of hair jell and spike it up.

Cast and Blast Anyone?

The hunting and fishing are about as good as it gets right now. I�ve been fishing when I have trips booked and duck hunting when I�m off. The fish are stacked up in feeding frenzies all over the lake and the ducks are here and holding with new birds coming in. Today I took out a group of 2 on a fishing trip and my cousin Micah went duck hunting with 2 other hunters.
The fishing was awesome today as expected. We started off the morning on anchor using bait in 32 ft on top of a ledge. It took about 20 minutes for the fish to really wake up and stack up under the boat but when they did it was on. In about an hour we but a limit of 20 good box fish in the boat and pulled anchor to spend the rest of our time playing C&R using lures and looking for a big fish. We thankfully found 1 big fish that went about 10 lbs. It was a little on the slim side but still good and healthy. We released it to fight another day. We were using 4� and 5� glow sassys in all depths of water under the birds. We steadily caught fish the whole trip until it got time to head back to the dock.

Here is the duck hunting report from Micah:
This morning we hunted a hole that Brian and I have hunted for years and it has always been good for some birds, especially under pressure. Luckily it paid off again today as we came back with a nice limit of 7 teal, 4 mallards, 4 gadwalls, and 3 pintails. We had good cloud cover to keep the birds flying low and late into the morning. We�ve come home with lots of birds our last 3 trips out and I'm looking forward to doing it again in the morning.

Well, I ordered a new Sustain FE 4000 today, should be here by next Wednesday. I would like to spool it with quality line to be able to get the most out of the reel. I will be spooling one spool with Sufix 30 lb perf Braid... There are a lot of opinions on braid, but I have tried this brand and like it, so why change to something I may not like?....

But on the second spool, I am open for suggestions... I had tried Berkley flourocarbon (their premium model, don't remember the name)on a previous reel, but was overall not happy with it... to much line memory, got stiff after a while, poor castability. Don't know if it was the brand or just because it was flourocarbon...

Even though I tried to make myself like it I found I was always using the braid, and the flourocarbon just sat in my tackle box...

Some others I have used in the past were Berkley IronSilk, yozuri hybrid...

Bottom line, I would like something to complement the braid and provide smooth casatbility, low memory and a little stretch when braid is not appropriate.

Will primarily be using the extra spool for soft plastics (saltwater) and a small jighead.

Any suggestions are appreciated...

President Zero Sum Goes to Asia

President Obama took his declining dollar to the Asia-Pacific economic conference, and he added to it a declinist opinion of America's economy. His big message? Don't count on American consumers to lead the world from recession to recovery and beyond. His second big message? In the U.S., we must save more and spend less.

Huh?

This is the same limits-to-growth, central-planning wisdom we hear so often these days at home. It's also tone deaf, to say the least. Despite a sinking greenback that is wreaking havoc among the Asian economies, and in the face of repeated currency warnings by Asian officials, Obama brought no King Dollar stabilization message to the conference.

Before getting into the currency question, let me say this: I think more saving (and investment) by U.S. citizens is a great idea. But this need not come at the expense of consumption. In a prosperous free economy, people should be able to save, invest, work and spend as much as they like. More is better than less in each case. Grow the pie larger.

Of course, if the president and his team want more saving and investment, they should end the multiple taxation of saving and investment. Unfortunately, our system taxes saving as income, capital gains, dividends and inheritance.

Team Obama also intends to tax wealth more by raising the top personal tax rate from 35 percent to 40 percent. And they apparently don't object to Nancy Pelosi's plan to slap another 5.4 percent tax on the incomes and capital gains of successful earners in order to finance a government takeover of health care.

Wealth is a crucial form of saving. And the investment that comes from extra saving is used to finance the entrepreneurial start-ups that create the jobs and incomes that allow families to spend. However, by creating a zero-sum game between saving and spending, the Obama planners are falling into an austerity trap -- one that would hand the American economy a second-place finish in the global race for capital and growth.

At the same time, Obama has no plan to stabilize King Dollar, and the Asian economies don't like it. China's top banking regulator said the Federal Reserve's money-creating binge was the main cause of "massive speculation." Similar sentiments came from top officials in Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan.

And while Ben Bernanke tried to calm dollar worries during his recent speech at the New York Economics Club, it was clear that the greenback's value ranks low on his priority list. Nothing but dollar lip service from the Fed head.

Because of the slumping dollar, U.S. import prices have jumped 10 percent at an annual rate over the past three months, and nearly 6 percent excluding energy. This is a tax hike on consumers and businesses, and it could depress holiday sales. It's reminiscent of the gigantic energy shock of 2008 that was caused by the dollar's collapse.

And what's the current U.S solution to the dollar problem? Blame China, and call for a revaluation of the yuan. But beggar-thy-neighbor protectionism never works, and it causes bad blood between the countries involved.

The powerful Asian economies actually have a better idea. They want to move toward a free-trade currency-cooperation zone -- much like the euro zone, fathered by Nobel economist Robert Mundell. This makes more sense in terms of world price stability and free capital flows. But the U.S. refuses to play.

So Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and others are forced to desperately buy sinking dollars in order to protect their export industries. But this only creates inflationary money expansion. The beleaguered U.S. dollar is in effect exporting U.S. inflation overseas.

President Obama did talk about entering free-trade discussions. But his commerce secretary, Gary Locke, threw cold water on the idea in a Singapore speech. He said trade agreements have to wait because of a crowded U.S. legislative agenda. (Hat tip: James Pethokoukis.) He may have a point: The South Korean free-trade bill has been languishing for several years in the Democratic Congress.

Then there's the massive U.S. health care takeover plan, which is now estimated at $3 trillion. This additional dollar depressant will tax the patience of China, Japan and other would-be buyers of our massive debt creation.

We cannot spend, tax or devalue our way into prosperity. Nor can we command the respect of other nations by telling them our economy cannot grow as rapidly in the future as it has in the past.

Ironically, these same Asian countries -- with their accelerated growth rates -- have borrowed a page from American free-market capitalism. Yet Obama makes no defense of our free-market system and provides no leadership on the leading economic questions.

In terms of global leadership, Ronald Reagan would say: "If not us, who? If not now, when?" It's a pity that President Obama doesn't share the Gipper's commitment to American leadership.

Before the Senate Judiciary Committee November 18th, 2009, Attorney
General Eric Holder revealed a stunningly broad and aggressive anti-gun
agenda ... Holder revealed his support for a national gun owner
registration scheme and authorizing the government to ban firearm
possession for any person by merely adding that person's name to the
terror watch list.

Drawing reasonable conclusions from what Holder publicly said, we now know:

* Holder wants a national, permanent gun registration system
administered by law enforcement. A registration of honest citizens that
have cleared the federal background check for gun purchases with those
records permanently retained by and shared among law enforcement.

* Holder wants new federal authority to prohibit any person on the
federal watch list (reported to be 400,000 names) from buying guns and
supports confiscating guns from those on the list who possess them.

Our interest in a single Supreme Court case has perhaps never been as
high as it is in a case currently being briefed. The issues are
fascinating on several levels, and the potential impact of a ruling is big.

The case is McDonald v. City of Chicago, for which the court granted
cert on Sept. 30. The petitioners in the case, a group challenging a
gun-control ordinance in Chicago, filed their brief with the court
earlier this week. Were the court to adopt their position -- something
well within the realm of possibility -- we could be looking at a
significant shift in the way the justices view the Constitution and
individual rights.

For background, we suggest you read Jess Bravin's story on the case,
from March, as well as our blog post on Bravin's article.

At issue, again, is the constitutionality of a gun-control ordinance in
Chicago. The Supreme Court shot down Washington, D.C.'s gun-control
ordinance two terms ago, in D.C. v. Heller. But the Heller opinion dealt
with a federal statute, not a state statute, and several federal courts
have since ruled that the Heller opinion does not apply to state
statutes. That is, the Second Amendment does not (yet) apply to the states.

The Seventh Circuit, in Chicago, rejected arguments to the contrary in
the McDonald case earlier this year, citing an 1886 Supreme Court
decision holding that the Second Amendment placed no limits on state
authority. The Seventh Circuit ruled that only the Supreme Court could
say whether the Second Amendment should be read otherwise.

So the question is this: if the court wants to overturn the Seventh
Circuit and shoot down the Chicago ordinance, how does it do it? How
does it justify an extension of the Second Amendment to the states?

And this is where things get interesting. In their brief filed earlier
this week, the petitioners advocate breathing new life into the moribund
Privileges or Immunities clause of the 14th Amendment. Specifically,
they argue that an originalist reading of the 14th Amendment dictates
that the right to keep and bear arms is a "privilege" and "immunity"
that a state must not abridge. (The National Rifle Association this week
filed an amicus brief supportive of the petitioners' position. The
respondents' brief isn't due until the end of December.)

However, resuscitating the PI Clause through an originalist lens could
open the door advocating for the existence of other types of rights that
have yet to be acknowledged by the Court. For instance, those on the
left might look for more room for personal rights like privacy, while
those on the right see more protection for business from regulation. In
either case, it could open the door for judicial determination of what
the privileges or immunities actually are.

Of course, nothing says the justices need to use the PI Clause, which
was largely neutered by the Slaughter-House Cases opinion in 1868, in
order to extend the Second Amendment to the states.

But at least one justice, Clarence Thomas, has voiced a willingness to
revisit the issue. In a dissent in a 1999 case, Thomas wrote: "the
demise of the Privileges or Immunities Clause has contributed in no
small part to the current disarray of our 14th Amendment jurisprudence."
To clarify things, "I would be open to re-evaluating its meaning in an
appropriate case."

Two Boats Sunk at the Dock

We had over 5 inches of rain last night and more today here in Aransas Pass. I went down to check on my boat this morning at the San Pat Navigation District Marina. All was well for me but there was a 31 foot ChrisCraft and a 32 foot boat that looked like a SeaRay that were already sunk. Another 30 foot Trojan had a severe list to starboard and definitely in danger of sinking. A sailboat and a tender both looked like they were in trouble. The Trojan and sailboat were saved. Just a reminder to keep those batteries and bilge pumps fully functional. The Coasties and GLO oil spill representative are all on the scene. Probably a few fines coming since boat sunken boats are leaking oil and fuel.
