View Full Version : New Quiter Needs Help
I have tried to quit between 5-10 times, the longest I have made it is 15 days. Stress is my biggest problem, my wife smokes so I have cigarettes at my disposal. I am 25, I quit dipping at 20 and started smoking at 21 (DUMB). I dipped since I was 14, and it was not as hard for me to give up the snuff.I hate smoking, it screws up my cardio, makes my clothes smell,it costs me about $12-$15 a week, and I am just plain tired of it. I want to show my wife that it is not as hard as it seems. I keep trying, but having a cigarette at my disposal, makes it hard, but to me thats no excuse. Also, I am not used to failing, so when I relapse I give myself hell over it.
Please Help!

One day at a time, my friend. I smoked for 33+ years. I quit on October 22nd of this year. I have relapsed a couple of times. I sign roll call in this forum every morning I can. Seems silly, but it helps. You have to want it in your own mind. Seems you do. Good Luck, if you really want it, you are half way there.

SP, Baits right. He caved a couple times and we didn't bash him too much. We have all been on the roller coaster. You just have to make up you mind to quit. Sign in roll call in the morning with your days tobacco free and get some seads or gum to keep you busy. Some of the others have tried medication so maybe they can give you more details on that option.

Try using the gum or maybe talk to your doctor about a prescription for Wellbutrin. The medication may take the stress edge off just enough to quit. My daughter's taking it to lose weight, she says it gives her willpower a little help.

I have thought about the Welbutrin, and I can't use the gum as it is to hard on my sensitive teeth. I like the cold turkey thing though b/c it is a test of my will power, and thanks for the encouragement. Right now I am working on keeping it at 3 a day or less (Monday and Tues I only had 1). When I get this down consistently I think I will just put the pack down. Another friend of mine who quit said to buy the cheepest ones I can find and that will seriously reduce the want. One day at a time I guess....
Any suggestions for those clutch moments where only a cigarette or a good scream wil do?

SP, when I tried to quit dipping a couple years ago I cut down like you are doing. It seemed to help although I started back up again. I picked the three times I craved a dip throughout the day. Morning, after lunch, and one at night. I stuck with those three times until I backed off to only dipping one time at night. This time I quit cold turkey and have been rid of it for over three months. Good luck and keep us posted.

Get the Commit Lozenges, they rock! I smoked for 20+ years and quit. It SERIOUSLY helps with the stress. I was trying to not use them and didn't do very well with my anger issues. I started using the commit lozenges to take the edge off and all was well. Now i may only have one or none of them a day and soon I don't think I'll need them at all. I haven't smoked in over two months and will never again. I just am not a smoker any more. BTW, my live in girlfreind still smokes, but not in the house. Doesn't bother me any more, I just don't like the smell of it. Good luck and let me know if I can help.

If you need $10 dollars off of the Commit just let me know. I have coupons for it and every coupon that gets used helps me out on my internship. The coupons expire 5/17/07. I will be willing to meet anyone in the Houston area and give them coupons to aid the to quit smoking!

'scuse my ignorance, but are Commit Lozenges over the counter, or 'script ?
I really need to think hard about quitting. My kids are all over me, and I know I'm gonna need some kind of assist.

My theory was that patches, pills, hypno, was just a substitute and would not work for me. After 30 years at 2 packs a day, I've been smoke free for over 100 days. Just reconize that a craving is very temporary and have something ready to do to distract you for 5 minutes until they go away. (push ups or jogging work well) I have also put the alcohol away for a while because thats when I crave the most. It is also when I make poor choices so I just refrain untill I am sure that I won't relaspe. Good luck, it is worth the effort for sure. (ps, My wife still smokes as well)

That will be my biggest problem. After I eat, " I gotta go smoke " . Drink a beer "gotta go smoke". It will take a lot of will power, but I know I gotta quit, and I know only I can control the urges.

Over-the-counter. Some Walmarts have them behind the pharmacy. I don't know why? Good luck!

The commit losenges have helped me, especially an ex dipper. I have had an extra losenge in my truck for an emergency for the past 3 weeks, I stopped using commit to get rid of the nicotine dependancy. I tried the Welbutrin but, I was told by people that it makes me mean and grumpy so I stopped taking it. The past couple of days I've had cravings but I just let them pass.
It really feels good to quit and be around other people that dip and smoke and not be tempted. I have quit several times and the longest had been 6 months but this time I have the best **** reason to quit. My baby girl will be here in 5 weeks.
Good luck and don't give up.
Thanks for the help folks!! I appreciate all the support. Now I have the wife on board. Jan 1 2007 I will quit. Don't want to be cranky during the holidays.I think I am just going to go cold turkey. This wil be my last attempt at quiting, come hell or high water I'm done at the end of the year. My bro in law/ fishing buddy is also quiting Jan 1. Good luck to the rest of you guys & gals trying to quit.

SP, that is great news. With family and friends also quitting, you can have your own support group to keep each other in check...at home and on the boat. Combined with this forum, you should have it licked in no time.
