Headed up to High Island Saturday morning to get some beach fishing in... Met Jolly Roger, Neverenough, TxRealAffair and a few other just after sun up.
Wind was very light and just a few ripples in the water. Beautiful day for fishing... I had promised my 11 year old daughter that I was going to let her catch her first Redfish ever on this trip.. So that was my goal..
The morning was a little chilly, so I started the day just casting from the sand..
Not much luck doing this with an outgoing tide..(low tide was approx Noon) Water got fairly low.. but not too bad. Around 9am I got the Kayak out and yakked a few lines a few hundred yards out. Thats what it took! About 10 minutes after I got back.. My 6ft boat rod w/ my Penn 4/0 takes off.. I set the hook and looked around for my daughter.. but she was wasnt ready.. so I landed the first Bull Red myself. It was arund 38 Inches and half the back tail bitten off. Old injury I presumed because the fish didnt seem to have any problems.. About an hour later.. I casted another bait out and crossed one of my yakked lines and spent about 20 minutes untangling the mess I made.. After freeing the lines.. I took up the slack from my yakked line.. and fish on! Not a real good fight though.. I pulled in a little shark to which I havent identified yet... Maybe a Sandbar i am guessing.. I rigged back up and ran some more baits out and about 30 minutes later.. My Penn 4/0 takes off screaming... This time.. I hook up and get my daughter in on some action... She did all she could to hold on for dear life and crank on this bad boy.. My girlfriend helper her keep the rop tip up while I took some pics.. She finally got the fish in and just about passed out from exhaustion.. One of the larger Bull Reds I have seen ina long while.. Well over 40 inches and at least 40+ pounds I and JR estimated.. I know one thing.. it was larger than any I had ever caught. So after a few pics and a nice release... She finally gets to sit down and relish her big fish moment. Hey .. I am a proud dad and dont mind a bit that she has caught a larger red than me.. Just more of a reason for me to get back out there and get my huge one next time.. All in all it was a little slow.. but with 3 Bull Reds.. One 36 Inch Shark and a handfull of Whiting and Croaker it was a great day on the sand..
