"The Red Sox met with the Houston Astros yesterday, and it was believed that obtaining relief help via a trade was high on their agenda. Houston closer Brad Lidge, as well as relievers Brad Qualls and Dan Wheeler, are three names the Red Sox have asked about (http://redsox.bostonherald.com/redSox/view.bg?articleid=167408), according to a baseball source."

In my 43 years on this planet I have learned journalists, particularly those who cannot spell a players name, might not be totally reliable in reporting rumors with any degree of accuracy.

All this is a rumor anyway. Fodder for armchair owners and GMs to kick back and forth during the winter. Besides, I don't think Drayton or Pupura will mess with the back end of our bullpen, it's one of the best in all of MLB. All of these teams who seem interested in Lidge aren't going to offer what he is worth and he is worth a whole lot more than most people here think he is worth. Most here would screw the pooch and not get enough for his talent, plain and simple.

The rumor I have heard is Lidge for Willy Mo Pena. I can't believe they would be the only players in the deal, though, if it were to go through. I don't see Willy Mo as being a huge factor if the Astros were to get him. But Lidge, although he has had a few struggles recently, should be able to be get back to his form of 2 years ago. I know the Red Sox would be thrilled to make this trade.

Wagner can stay in New York as far as i am concerned. His stats have been pretty good, but they do not tell the whole story. He has been a high wire act for the last couple of years. It is easy to look at stats and say "I wish we had that guy", but the fact is that closers are generally shaky, unless you are talking about Rivera in New York or the guy in San Diego.

One of my co-workers just told me that he heard on the radio this morning that they made soriano and carlos lee some offers this morning. anybody else hear about this?

Yeah, its all over ESPN. They made offers to both Lee and Soriano, and will make one to Woody Williams soon. They could be the multimillion dollar offers it would take to land each of them or it could be an offer of a piece of chewing gum.

How cool would it be to see Lee and Soriano on this team? Probably won't happen, but it sure is fun to dream.

It has been pretty well reported that they are in serious discussions with Woody Willams. They have made offers to 2 other free agents, which most people are assuming are Lee and Soriano. I have also read that there have been discussions about trading for Jason Jennings from Colorado, which would be an excellent move. They are reportedly after a center fielder, but seem to like Chris Burke more than Willy T. Jennings and Williams would be a very nice addition to Oswalt in our rotation. I really do not think Pettite or Clemens are coming back.

i really do not think we will sign both Lee and Soriano. You know, it is very likely that we sign neither, especially if the price list gets too outragous. Both players carry a little bit of baggage and you have to be careful of who you give big money, long term contracts to.

How cool would it be to see Lee and Soriano on this team? Probably won't happen, but it sure is fun to dream. It would be cool, but I'm certain it won't happen. Soriano is asking for a 6 year, $120 million deal, which is $17mil a year. Lee will probably go for about $15mil a year. I think the Astros will only have about $30 million to spend this year, and that will have to include some pitching.

The other deal I've heard mentioned is Chris Burke for Jason Jennings of the Rockies. He's been durable and had a 3.78 ERA last year, and that's even with pitching half his games in Colorado. He even won the NL Rookie of the Year in 2002. I believe he's in the last year of his current contract and will make $5.5 million next year. Edit: Update on Jennings as of yesterday. News: Jennings was offered a two-year contract extension by the Rockies, the Rocky Mountain News reports. The Rockies recently exercised a 2007 option for $5.5 million and the two-year extension would raise his guarenteed money to $16 million. I don't know if this changes anything, but if he signs the extension I don't see him being traded.

Other names that have been thrown around are Willy Taveras, Aubrey Huff, Brad Lidge, Chad Qualls, Dan Wheeler and Morgan Ensberg. I can't believe Qualls and Wheeler would get traded, though, because they're the backend of the bullpen and have been solid.

I'd love to see Woody here. He has been wanting to play and finish his career here for a couple of years now. That is one guy we could definitely use in the pitching staff.

I like the idea too. I don't like trading Burke, period. He is our second baseman after Biggio reaches 3,000 hits! Just be patient, please! Wily T is option for trade in my book because we are loaded with outfielders. Bruntlette is fine candidate for center. IMO, Bruntlette is probably the most well rounded player on our team and needs to be in the lineup daily but his value on the bench for late inning replacements in also highly coveted. I could even do without Lee and Soriano. Soriano showed his arse when he initially said he wouldn't play outfield for the Nationals. Robinson probably told him he would or else he'd be extracting Franks boot from his rearend! We don't need somebody that is not a team first player and I don't think Soriano is one of those players. Lee is a mystery to me. I would like to see how he looks physically. He seems to remind me of me as far as food goes, he can't get enough of it! We don't need a slow outfielder, even if he plays in left. I'd love to see Woody here. He has been wanting to play and finish his career here for a couple of years now. That is one guy we could definitely use in the pitching staff.

Woody Williams has been an Astro Killer for years and it would not surprise me if he chose to end his carrer in his hometown. It would be a solid pickup for the Astros.

Heard today Pettite is surprised he has not had an offer from the Astros. I think he is a classy guy but am not surprised. I am sure we have all had girlfriends that thought the same way but just were not that good. I know I have seen that movie.

If Roger does come back we should all pinch ourselves because we are living the dream.

I personally think we would be nuts to let Lidge go, or wheeler or qualls or Willie T

Woody Williams lives a couple of miles from me... I would bet you see him wearing Astro's colors this year.

I was talking with him last December and he wanted to come home/here so bad it was crazy. I know he would LOVE to finish his career here. This isn't the first time he has talked to the stros and this time it would be great to get the deal done. He is a class guy that would fit great in the Astros organization.
