Just for some fun from all ags and 'Horns...

What is your best memory from this series?

I have so many. I remember scores mostly. The ones that come to mind are 50-20 in 02, 51-15 in '96, 46-15 in '03 at Pyle and 43-17 in 2000.

BUT, the game I remember vividly was 1998. The ags were ranked #6 (or 5), TEXAS was not. Ricky was running like there was no tomorrow and he was set to break Dorsett's record. He smashed the record, but TEXAS did not run away with the game. Ag's, quite frankly, could have easily won after mounting one heck of a comeback. But as my father always says, they're aggies for a reason and they "aggied" it away after a great drive executed perfectly by Major Applewhile, Derek Lewis and Ricky Williams. TEXAS wins 26-24. A great day to be at the game and a Longhorn!

Share one if you have one..

Yep aggy, that's when I bought my t-shirt, even though I had been attending school there already! After this past Saturday though, I'm gonna look for a shirt from whomever wins the OSU vs Michigan game. You're a funny guy dennis.

I attended that game and had to sit by myself as our tickets were split up. I don't recall that we lost as much as the fact that everyone in that place shared the heartfelt loss of those young men. I still remember just sitting there around a bunch of strangers in a melancholy silence, seems that day it was not about Aggies or Longhorns or even rivalry.

That 1996 game was a great memory. I was sitting in a bar in New York City watching with my cousin, who graduated from Texas A&M. We had to buy the other a drink everytime the other team scored. Needless to say, I was SMASHED! hehehehe

I have had a lot of fond memories of this game. There are a lot of aggies in my family and we would usually watch from a hunting camp somewhere. Us lonhorns were always outnumbered, but rarely unheard!

Go Rutgers! (need to find that t-shirt).

I recall going my freshman year on a pretty cold Thanksgiving Day with a high school friend who was an A&M fan (he did not attend the school but I did not hold that against him). By the end of the first quarter it was clear we were going to win it going away. My friend was a bit sick and we were both keeping a close eye on the nearby coed with a bottle of Southern Comfort in her purse, but none came our way!

Final score: (http://www.mackbrown-texasfootball.com/index.php?s=&url_channel_id=36&url_subchannel_id=&url_article_id=1349&change_well_id=2)

Nov. 25 (#14) Texas A&M W 53-16t

Despite the outcome, a game that stands out to me is the 1995 match-up. Last game of the SWC, winner take call, and the horns came through with a 16-6 win (Fran musta been calling in those field goals back then too huh). Since 1984, A&M had only lost one match up, owning the horns and hadn't lost a home game in 30+ games. That game marked the end of the old SWC and the end of an era of dominance for A&M football.

Oddly enough, I also got to meet up close and personal plenty of horn fans. I was seated on the goalline next to their section (they were in the begining of the old horseshoe) and they were the most obnoxious fans I've ever met. They were drunk, they were very vulgar (despite plenty of woman, children and older fans of both teams in their presence) and they were throwing their empty beer/liquor bottles at the corps/players/police officers on the field.

After the game, these same horns fans attempted to celebrate their miraculous win on our Kyle Field, I think most of us on this board know the outcome of that. In all the mayham and mini riot, I remember the corp forming a human fence preventing those drunk fans from storming our field. The one or two that did manage to get through paid the price and ended up wiping their blood with the handcuffs they were provided by DPS while still attached to the North Field Goal Post.

Its hard to get that impression of horns fans out of my mind; you don't get a second chance to make a first impression. But hell, even after several chances, most horns fans haven't been able to convince me they don't fit the above description.

Funny -- I seem to remember a game at Memorial Stadium with some rude, drunk A&M fans sitting in the aisle and causing trouble -- loud, vulgar, obnoxious.

The thing is, I never assumed that all A&M fans were that way, and I have a great deal of respect for many of the people on this board from A&M. Now don't get me started about sitting in the OU section at Texas-OU...

bevo/fishing/hunting

Why does aggy think they're such great fans? I have been to every Big 12 stadium and attended at least 1 game at every school, and with the exception of ou fans, aggy fans are the worst. Maybe because they like to brag about how great they are and do what they say don't do! Sorry dennis, your fans ain't so great!

Hey, I'm not saying we're model fans, this thread was started by YOU regarding memories from games throughout the years, this is one that stood out?!? If the shoe fits, wear it, if not dismiss it.

Hey bevo, I give you a little more respect than referring to you by one of the many derrogatory names for horn fans, so I'd appreciate the same courtesy. Somebody else has told you before and now I am, you spell Aggie with an "ie" not "y". If you can't show that respect, then it clearly shows which shoe fits you.

I guess sarcasm isn't taught at a&m.. sorry you don't know what that is. Longhorn fans are often referred to as 'whorn fans', t-sips, hippes, etc.. You often refer to the school as 'tu', but for some reason it is always ok for ya'll to do it. No harm, no foul when that's is done. I think it's quit funny and spirited.

This football game is about hate between the 2 FOOTBALL teams. I HATE YOUR FOOTBALL TEAM! You hate mine. The exception, IMHO, is when 1 or the other is playing ou. Many ags and other 'horns dont agree though. That's the way IT SHOULD BE! I don't hate you, or your school for that matter. Your school is top tier, in fact!

My favorite memory is walking out of Kyle Field in 1995 as the last SWC Champions. (I wasn't drunk and I didn't storm the field afterwards). That was a great game where Ricky ran wild as a freshman and James Brown played on a horribly sprained ankle.

Ricky setting the record on the long touchdown run in 1998 is a close second.

BTW, I don't hate the Aggies. They've been too insignificant to care about for the last decade.

In my 376 posts, I'd be surprised if I refered to that university in Austin as t.u. Now, back in my day in college, it was probably no holds barred, but since then I've met many good horns (you and 4X4tx are obviously not in that list) and realize its all good as long as some respect is shared.

My favority memories from the games include Ricky locking down the Heisman (that was magnificent) and standing up Darren Lewis short of the goal line to secure our rare victory (we got accused of cheating for some reason...).The last several years kind of blur together. dennis,

I was born a Longhorn fan! My father graduated with honors from UT before getting his masters from there. Several aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. have also attended school there getting law degrees, medical degrees, etc. I come from a proud Longhorn family.

My inlaws are proud aggie fans. My brother-in-law graduated from A&M in 2003 with a Petroleum Engineering degree. He has done very well after school, and my wife and I are proud of him.

I also have an uncle who retired as a Lt. Col. in the Army. He is a graduate of A&M.

OK guys, consider me an outsider looking in with no preference to either school really, but for you UT fans, I don't think I would continue praising what a great person/athlete Ricky Williams was. I think we all know where he is now and what he's done to get there.

If I was a UT fan, which again I have no preference, I'd probably find someone with a little more class, that fits more of a model citizen type status than Ricky Williams. After all, I don't think anyone on this board wants their kids to grow up to be like Ricky Williams, so why do you praise him.

I'm guessing Earl Campbell memories would probably be a little higher on my "memories" list than any Ricky Williams' moment if I was a UT fan.

The most memorable for me was my freshman year in 84 when we went to Austin as a 500 team, unranked playing against a very good Texas team with everybody saying we didn't stand a chance in hell at beating them. Domingo Bryant blocked a field goal try right before halftime and returned it all the way for a touchdown and that led to a second half domination and an Aggie victory 37-12. The start of 4 very good years against the horns before I graduated.

Despite what everybody is saying about the Ags and Coach Fran, they were saying the same thing about Jackie back then. The pendelum always swings back and forth and we might not win this year but that gap is getting closer.

Logic says the Ags shouldn't win this year either against a team that was trying to get back into a national championship game just last week. I am going with my gut feeling that says somehow, someway, we come up on the winning end of the game.

Dennis in Donna,

I like a good rivalry also. But have you ever noticed that the losers always seem to mock the 'fans'? Your whining and crying is getting out of hand. Here's a tip - if you don't like the fans then don't buy a seat in a stadium surrounded by them! Let me guess - you also had your Gig Em shirt on?? As far as rivalry is concerned your team needs to step it up. I like the Aggyies and I like to see them win except against my tsip team - tu - where I own a number of fresh tshirts including ones that say Rose Bowl Champs and NCAA Champions! Dennis in Donna, in order for a rivalry to work you have to at least win once in a while. We're getting a little deep into this decade and you guys haven't won yet. This rivalry is starting to look more like a proximity thing than a win/loss thing.

Also, since ya'll have actually started getting some good looking girls there - get some FEMALE cheerleaders!!!http://www.2coolfishing.com/ttmbforum/images/icons/icon10.gif

My favorite is the 1974 game. My Dad got tickets at the last minute from his boss. Texas kicked off to aggy and on the first play the ags fumbled. Raymond Clayborn ran it in on the first play for Texas from about 35 yards. Texas kicks off again. First play, ags fumble again, Texas defensive end grabs it out the air and runs it in untouched. Less than a minute into the game and Texas leads 14-0. By halftime the only agricultural fans left were the band and the milkmen which made for a pleasant second half.

You offer such great insight, I never woulda thunk it. Did you just like how "Dennis in Donna" looked on the screen, or is there a reason you felt compelled to include it twice?!? Do you really think I heed your advice and/or care about you basking in your t-shirts?
You talk about Ags whining? You horn fans are all the same as well. Last year the BCS was no problem because you rode it to your t-shirt. Earlier this year its a crappy system that wasn't going to let the National Champs defend their title? Which is it?

Hullabaloo, kaboom kaboom: Aggie president takes over Defense Department

Sunday, November 12, 2006

If you hear a lot of bleating in the distance coming from the east, it's because the sheep in Iraq are nervous today. Why? Because President Bush has picked an Aggie big shot to serve as this nation's Defense secretary.

If asked to step into that ticklish position, most normal people would have told Bush to go chase himself. But Aggies aren't normal people. Aggies are the kind of folks who rise to the challenge. Only an Aggie would be, uh, foolhardy enough to accept this unpopular and difficult job.

So you've got to admire the guts of Robert Gates, who expects to step down as Texas A&M president to take over for Donald Rumsfeld, whose main duty had become traveling about the country so that people could holler insults at him from across the room. What was Gates thinking? Boy, is he in for it. If he thought the Army game was tough, wait till he has to deal with the Mahdi Army.

On the other hand, Corps of Cadets, Abu Ghraib: What's the difference?

Not that I'm saying Gates getting the head Defense job is a bad thing. Aggies and defense go hand and hand. Before Dennis Franchione came along, A&M had one.

Gates served as the director of the Central Intelligence Agency before he moved to Bryan-College Station in 2002 to become the head of the, uh, Central Unintelligence Agency.

Some people think that the way to handle the Iraq problem would be to divide up the country and give equal chunks of land to the Kurds, Sunnis and Shiites. With an Aggie running the show, the fix might be to build a large bonfire and stick an outhouse on top.

Now, many may wonder if an Aggie leader is intellectually capable of dealing with the Iraqi situation, since most A&M graduates think Kurd has something to do with cheese. And, let's face it, putting an Aggie in charge of the war in Iraq could lead to the stockpiling of pitchforks and cloning the occasional companion animal.

But the job is a natural fit for Gates. Basically, A&M president and Defense secretary are the same darned position. When you're the head honcho at A&M, you're dealing with guys in burr haircuts, men who march and dudes who can really shine the heck out of a pair of shoes. When you're the boss at the Defense Department, you're dealing with guys in burr haircuts, men who march and dudes who can really shine the heck out of a pair of shoes. Plus, either job is a good one if you get the itch to make somebody drop and give you 20.

So Gates should love his new gig. And, you know, the restaurants in the Green Zone can't be a lot worse than the dining options in Bryan-College Station. Although I doubt if the Green Zone has a Dixie Chicken.

There are a lot of intellectual reasons why it's a good idea to have an Aggie in a spot that could reshape world history. A university where lofty thoughts are commonplace, A&M is the place where cutting-edge vegetable scientists developed the maroon carrot.

Plus, Aggies understand tribal hatred. I think most of them feel about the Teasips the way the Sunnis feel about the Shiites. So Robert Gates, get after it. You da man. Gig 'em.

dennis,

Did I hear you say ya'll still sell out? Not according to your athletic department.

And the whole best fan deal that ya'll claim is a bunch of BS. It's a self awarded award. I know ags are all about patting themselves on the back. I guess that wasn't boooooooing I heard the last 2 weeks either???Then you say that it was meant for me? Hey I didn't say that I condoned the booing or that it didn't happen. All I said is that we are the best fans and I don't think its self proclaimed if acknowledged everytime they air our games.

I didn't say we sold out all year either, I said "we still sell out", go do some research to try to prove me wrong on that one as well. BTW, thanks for not typing aggY, and just keeping it at ags.

And next time you want to call me out, call me out on something I actually said and/or did, thats atleast twice I prove you wrong when you try to call me out.

Serious question goose.. when does one become an aggie? I did not go to A&M or any college but my husband is Class of '76. IMHO, one becomes an Aggie when they realize they believe in and respect traditions and are patriotic. TAMU is a conservative culture - much more so than UT - duh! I will gladly raise my sons believing in patriotism & conservatism. The Aggie network is incredible - once an Aggie, always an Aggie - no ex-Aggie club. I know many love to rag on Aggies (especially during football season) and if you enjoy doing that, just remember no school is on top forever. When you're on top, the only way to go is down.

I've been enjoying this thread for the last couple of days, but have to weigh in. I didn't go to UT or A&M although I had the chance to go to both.

Most of you know me as an Aggie fan. That's because my son goes there, my other son is planning to go there, and I am on one of the advisory boards in the business school. My son was accepted to both UT and A&M, and after visiting both schools it was no contest for A&M.

My brother went to UT and is a season ticket holder for the last 20 years so I have been to almost every UT/A&M game at UT since then. I have also been to a number of A&M games at Kyle. There is no comparison to a game at Kyle field versus a game at D. Royal/Joe Jamal field (or whatever it's called now).

At UT they get drunk and act obnoxious. At Kyle field, they honor tradition and create the best college football experience in the nation.

That's what won my son over and that's why I am an Aggie fan. This country could use a lot more of what A&M has to offer IMO.

Just like usual Bevo: you will make a good liberal journalist whenever you graduate. You just put once piece of information out and assume that is the whole story. Kyle (there is no P) holds 82,600. I let you do a little more research if you are able to (afterall any good respected journalist would not want his credibility ruined) and tell us that there was only one game this year we sold out. Nice try though flame thrower

You should have a nice career with CNN someday. You will fit right in with their biased reporting ways.

Well stated waterman...since BEVO is a journalist who want everything attributed...here ya go:In 1999 the $32.9 million Bernard C. Richardson Zone raised the capacity of Kyle Field to 82,600 making it the largest football stadium in the state of Texas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas) at the time. "The Zone" also brings the fans in the north end zone 65 feet closer to the action on the field of play- straight from this site:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyle_Field

Now check out the official attendane numbers from the Aggie football boxscores TT =85979, OU = 85697, NU = 83336

Did some digging BEVO: Seems DKR stadium holds: The current official stadium (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stadium) capacity (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seating_capacity) is 85,123 according to the same site - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darrell_K._Royal-Texas_Memorial_Stadium

I congratulate ya'll for selling out all your home games this year after winning the national championship last year. For comparisons sake I looked at last years attendance for the horns home games prior to winning the national championship in a normal year with all the Vince Young heisman hype etc. Interestingly (straight from the horn football site) not 1 single sellout out.

Just FYI from texassports NOT wikipedia...

More immediately, two major upgrades have been made for the 2006 season, including a new video board and temporary bleacher seating in the south end zone, which has expanded the stadium's capacity by over 4,000 seats to a total of 85,123.

So, in review, take away the 4,000 temp seats that were put in THIS SEASON and last season we had sellouts EVERY home game.

85,123 - 4,000 = 81,123 official capacity during the 2005 season.

Try again bro!

Red
11-15-2006, 10:38 AM
Austin and the surrounding area is probably nearing 1,000,000. B/CS is about, what 100,000? And that is during the school year. 10:1.

Putting the students aside because both teams have 'em, Aggie fans drive two hours or more to see their team play, leaving behind the Astros, Rockets, Texans, Mavs, Cowboys, Rangers, and Spurs. Austin commuters are so close they could take taxis, and have no pro sport teams to choose from for the 'fix'.

Hence, DKR Jamal Memorial Stadium is absolutely FILLED to capacity with t-shirt fans, and sold-out even if they are playing Sam Houston State.

I do agree that because of the rural atmosphere in BCS, ags do have to drive to see their team lose 3 home games this season..lol.. TEXAS does have a fair amount of traveling fans. I drive from SA for every home game.. about 1 1/2 hours. People around me come from Dallas, Houston, Corpus, the valley, and one wealthy couple flies in from LA every game.

This has really gone downhill. Ya'll are now arguing about the size of the city the college is in. Red, if you have every tried to get out of Houston on friday when Texas plays, it is a nightmare. Its a nightmare whether they don't play, but I would say a good percentage of fans travel from Houston. There is 4 million people in Houston if not more now. That was last year. I could spit a loogie on college station from here and its a 2 and half hour drive to austin from here. So I would say population of city really has nothing to do with it.
