I am looking at a Ford Excursion with a V10. What are the pros/cons of the V10? I have a Powerstroke in my F-350 so I know how it will perform. I need as much info on the V10 as I can get.

Now that deseil is $.50 more per gallon and I can't justify the extra cost of the powerstroke. If I get 11mpg in the V10, it will cost the same amount per mile as it would in my powerstroke.

Gas will go back up, diesel will eventually come down a little.

Get the diesel.

I had a 90 F-250 V10 and got upwards of 16mpg driving like an old man. it was 2wd with an extended cab. A little underpowered to pull my 5th wheel.
But just on the highway I liked it fine.

From someone that gets 13 mpg on the highway when gas is $3.00 a gallon.... don't do it! You got the POS... wait, PS :D Why would you saddle yourself with something like a V10?

My buddies F 250 4X4 with the V 10 averaged 10.5 and he did alot of highway miles. He was glad when it got stolen...LOL

My BIL has a V10 Excursion. It's a nice engine, but he says he gets 14mpg on the highway and about 10 mpg in town. If he tows anything it drops down into the single digits pretty quickly.

If you want to drive something that big, I'd stick with the PSD. My F350 PSD CC 4wd gets about 16mpg around town and 21mpg at 70 on the highway. Towing my boat (about 4000lbs) it drops down about 3mpg.

Towing my boat (about 4000lbs) it drops down about 3mpg.Yikes! And I thought the Chevy 6.0 was bad!

Guess you meant 13?

EDIT: Nevermind, you said it drops down 3 mpg, not drops down TO 3 mpg.

BTW, I am not selling my powerstroke. I am thinking of replacing my wife's suburban with an Excursion. My 99' 1/2ton sub. gets about 11mpg and cannnot pull my 32' travel trailer. My thoughts are to buy a 05' excursion with a V10. the advantages of the V10 as I see it are:1. It can pull the travel trailer. 2. It's $4000 dollars less than the comperable excursion w/ powerstroke. 3. based on today's fuel prices, it cost the same($/mile) to drive my powerstroke s does the suburban and 4. I don't see diesel getting cheaper until we make bio diesel like we are making ethanol.

Am I missing anything?

You ought to get a pretty good deal on one right now.

Sounds like you need a tune-up on the suburban. I get 17-18 on the highway at 75mph and about 14-15 around town. '99 1/2 ton 2wd 5.7

Yeah my 2004 4X4 Suburban averages almost 14.. not the same motor though. Mine is a 5.3L and is mostly driven stop and go in town until deer season.

When I was looking at used rigs, I was turned off when one was thrust to me that had the V-10. Those that had the Diesel were kept by the owners. My sister has a diesel in her excursion. She could get a new vehicle every year, but can't find something else she likes better so she keeps it.

In general, the heavier the load/vehicle the more the diesel shines.

I have always regreted selling my F350 Diesel.

CC,
We have a 2000 V-10 in an Excursion and really like it. Have 174K on the motor with no problems so far (knock on wood) we get 17 to 18 on the hwy depends on who's driving and when we hook onto the boat get around 10 or 11 MPG thats with the boat having a K-top on it so not to bad. As you know you won't get blown all over the road in this tank rides real well and has all the room you need, we take the back seat out and have slept in the back of the thing at a couple of cookoffs when the adult bev's are running wild. All in all it's been a good truck and has done everything we've asked of it sure is nice on long road trips. The only problem I've had is when you get the 44 gals of gas in the tank it looks like the rear bumper is going to drag the ground so when pulling a trailer you need to keep this in mind.

My 99' 1/2ton sub. gets about 11mpg Tell Danica Patrick (aka the wife) to take her foot out of it :D ... or get a tune up. You're right about it not pulling the camper though.

Go with the diesel or wait for the long wheel base Expedition that is coming out later this fall or early in '07. Personally, I think the Excursion is too big and cumbersome and the current Expedition is too small.

The long wheel base Expedition should be around the same size as the Suburban and I would think the mileage would be similar.

One good thing about V10 is you can pull large boat in overdrive at same mileage.

I work 1 mile from office so mileage isn't big factor.

And in a exclursion you can put 4x8 sheets of plywood on floor in back and close the rear doors in the rain.

A friend of mine has the v-10 and it goes through fuel filters very quickly. He has to change it like 4 or 5 times per year.
