With yesterday's confirmation by the doctor that my wife is 9 weeks into the pregnancy of our 2nd child, I have decided to quit using copenhagen after 22 years. I will be a long haul, but I am doing ok so far. I officially quit at 10:30a.m.
yesterday. Any and all support is welcome.

i happen to just put in a dip right before reading this..... Good for you. Yesterday I had an ulcer on my lip no doubt from irritation due to cope. I want to quit as well.... I'm tired of it but haven't been able to kick it. It would save me 60 bucks a month easy... Have you heard of that new stuff called Blue Whale? It is some kind of alternative to snuff minus all the cancer causing ingredients...

Use patches and gum. They really helped my wife quit smoking. The patches remove most of the bad cravings, and the gum is there for when it becomes overpowering.

I'd be in for a 2cool support group....i've been at it for 15 yrs and want to quit as well. I've tried the gum, the patch, the commit lozenges, and cold turkey and have gone as along as a few months....but somehow those cans find their way back into my pocket.

I am in for Monday as my quit date, I have been a religious Cope user since I was about 15 and the wife is really on me about quitting. I would quit today with yall but knowing that I got the County Fair and Rodeo this weekend, it would be short lived standing out back of the chute's helping with the stock. So Monday I give up the can!! Good luck to everyone!!! I used smokey mountain the last time I quit about a month ago, it seemed to help. The trick for me anyway is to stay away from situation's that make you want a dip, buddies that dip or standing around drinking a cold adult beverage with buddies, thats the hardest and thats what knocked me off last time.

Might I suggest that in support of your quitting your nasty little habit that everytime that you feel the need to dip, you kindly send me a check in the amount of that can of snuff. Then...when you are good and clean...I will take you out and celebrate with the money I saved you!!!! ....hehe
(Added: I will also wear the clothes I purchased with that money....hehe)

Good luck guys! I know old habits die hard...

To begin I loved snuff. I loved to dip. HOWEVER!!!

I quit this way. I studied what happens when you get mouth cancer which can occur within one year or 22 years. It is just a time bomb waiting to explode and it scared the **** out of me.

The mortality rate for mouth cancer is 50% and those who survive have their entire face mutilated. It is one of the most horrifying ways to die.

Those who drink and dip increase their chances of getting mouth cancer 100 times.

It usually starts on the toungue or the tounge area which means they cut out a piece of your tounge leaving you either unable to speak or severely limited. Once it spreads to the lymph nodes your toast in most cases.

Google Image Mouth Cancer and after looking at those pictures tell me you want to put that stuff in your mouth.

80% to 90% of mouth cancer is tobacco related.

There are numerous cancer causing agents in spit tobacco one being battery acid, and the other being formaldahyde.

There have been cases where mouth cancer has caused people to have to go in remove parts of their chest.

In the early 80's a 14 year old boy started dipping and by the time he was 20 he was the dead. The pictures were gruesome.

Good news is that your mouth will heal if given the chance and in most cases the white patches on your gums which are pre cancerous legions will go away within 2 to 3 months. When your mouth heals you will be amazed at how damaged it was. You forget what a healthy mouth looks like after years of dipping. I was in the same boat.

Anyway, good luck I hope that helped.

I just had my 4 yr anniversary after 25 yrs. of a can a day. What really helped me the most was using Bac Off. Taste is not that bad..and for awhile just takes the place of the other. I really dont think after 4 yrs I would even like to take one again. The interest is gone. Good luck to you.

I'm a monday quitter myself, let jsut see if we can get a group together and all give it up on monday? That way we will all have the same quit date and all go through hell together!
I'm in. I quit last November after 25 years. I started back 3 months later off and on. Just this past week I have been dipping more (STRESS!!!). Do you know how hard it is to dip behind your wifes back?? She caught me 2 months ago and she was a buger to deal with. I have made a promise that I would quit before my child is born.

Here's an idea that MAY help to lessen the cravings.

Wear a rubber band on your wrist. Every time you think about taking a dip, pop the rubber band hard. This retrains your mind to associate PAIN instead of pleasure when you think about a dip. (At the same time, you could get a mental picture of your children being fatherless.)

I hope this little tip helps some of you, and I'm so very PROUD of each of you for wanting to be healthier and live longer to be with your family.

Since my daughter's husband just died of a sudden heart attack Sept. 15, I can tell you it's TRULY an awful time for the family left behind (wife 39, sons 9 and 2 years old).

I heard about something called Blue Whale that you may want to look into. I think their web site is: www.bluewhalesmokeless.com (http://www.bluewhalesmokeless.com)

It is an non-tobacco dipping alternative. Supposedly lacks all of the carcinogens.

Just my 2cents.

Congrats and good luck. After 20 years of chewing I quit the habit when my first child was born. He's 8 now and I'm still tobacco free. Can't say that I don't have the urge every now and them especially when I'm fishing. Gave in twice in the 8 years and chewed while I was playing golf. Made me sick both times.

Hang in there. You can do it.

I quit a little over a month ago after a 21 year can a day habit of Copenhagen. I joined an online support group dedicated to smokeless quitters. You sign in every morning for roll call basically promising you will be dip free for the day. It has helped out greatly and we could do this here. All we would need to do is start a new thread here and sign in every morning by cutting and pasting & adding you name to the bottom of the list. Maybe we could get our own section. Anyone know how to go about doing that? It could be for smokers trying to quit as well.

I quit biting my nails, drinking, and smoking in that order in a short two year period years ago. It can be done it just takes a commitment and a lot of support. Quit one day, one dip or smoke at a time. That's all you have to do, that and change your behavior or routine. Don't do things that trigger the urge and have something else to substitute in those trigger periods.
I used to smoke with morning coffee, now I read 2cool with coffee. Getting in the car after work was a trigger to light up. I would eat sunflower seeds instead. After dinner or meals take a short walk instead of smoking/dipping. When I had super cravings I took alkaseltzer.

There will always be a reason or excuse you give yourself for smoking /dipping/or any other bad behavior....... I have to (insert vice) because I'm fishing, at the ball game, I'm stressed at work, blah, blah, blah.

Good luck guys I'm pulling for you.

This is too wierd, I was thinking just yesterday that it was time to quit dipping. I quit smoking years ago, but somehow started dipping when I went fishing. After awhile i started going on fishing trips just to have an excuse to buy a can of cope :)
Then I figured it was a lot cheaper to just buy the can and not need to go all the way to the bay!

At the time a can of cope was about a dollar. I've switched to a value brand, but really could use the extra $60+ back and my wife would be thankful for the absence of spit cans and dry tobacco crumbs.

I'm in for quitting too!

SOmething elese you have to watch. When I quit I replaced the dipping with gum, candy, and snacking. weight went up about 35 pounds. When the weight peaked my blood sugar went haywire. Doc put me on medication but set my mind on a life style change got on a strick diet and could get off the meds in about 3 months. When you make a lifestyle change like quitting dipping make sure you are not substituing thewrong thing to help you quit. Sunflower seeds are good but think of the increase sodium if you have high blood pressure. Watch your weight and things will be fine

Quit Copenhagen after about 15 years dipping. Gave it up when I got my new wife 4 years ago! hehe Used the patch and Mint Snuff. Still carry mint snuff patches in the glove box and boat but don't use it but maybe once or twice a week now. There are still times when I want to pack a whole can in my lip.

Try this: get some of those swizzle sticks used by the bars to put in drinks.Put several in your top pocket each morning. Keep one in your mouth as often as you even think about a dip. Learn to do things with them like tieing them in a knot inside your mouth. Most of the dependency is psycological and having something to do/chomp on will help you during withdrawal. I quit smoking cold turkey 18 yrs ago after 2 packs a day and did the swizzle stick thing. It worked for me. Good luck.

I did the same thing 14 years ago. My wife and I were childless after 7 years of marriage "at her desire". She was after me to quit tobacco and I told her if I had a reason to quiit I would. Having grown up in a home where mom smoked Vicerory cigs and dad smoked a pipe, I knew if I had a kid I wouldn't want to be the reason they started. The wife called me at work August 1992 several weeks after we "tried" and asked what I had in my mouth. I knew what she meant and was overjoyed! After using snuff or chewing tobacco from the time I was 12 until I was 33 I made my mind up then and there and quit cold turkey. My last chew came three days later at the end of the shift rotation. I have never gone back. I knew if I gave in it would just be one excuse after another. Good Luck to you! I can't think of a better reason to quit! Now if I could just leave the peppermints alone......

I never dipped snuff but I smoked for about fifteen years. Quitting smoking is the hardest thing I have ever done . I quit about five times before I gave it up for good. I have been smoke free for about fifteen years now, What motivated me to quit is the price of a pack of cigarettes. I refused to pay $1.50 for a pack. With the price at $3.50 a pack or higher I do not see how anyone can afford to smoke. Look at the money you guys could save by giving up tobacco. I hope this helps.

This is cool, my wife told me I could put the five dollars a day that I don't spend on snuff in a special account and I could spend it anyway I wanted to. She told me that it could go toward the elk hunt I have been hounding her about for the last year.

I quit 3 years ago after my second daughter was born. I dipped 1 can of skoal a day and smoked also for about 20 years, I also drank quite a bit. The thought of my daughters growing up in this ****** up world without me to help them and protect them scared the crud out of me. I still drink beer though ;) however not as much

The hardest times when the urge hits is in the morning, getting in the car, after meals, and hunting or fishing. I attempted quitting a thousand times only to have everyone around me ticked off all the time because I was nico fiending. I found that if I kept my teeth brushed and always had something else to chew on I was OK. I also seperated myself from situations and people that were smoking or chewing. Hunting and fishing I always had a bag of Jalapeno sunflower seeds. The urge will always be there just not as strong.

Good luck!!
