Hi everybody. I am new to the forum and to the sport. Me and a buddy are trying to learn all we can about Lake Conroe and Lake Houston. We plan to get my kids out there for some fishing and could use all the advise we can get. We have a 12' & a 14' flat bottom (no trailer or motor) that we are planning to try rigging up to do some fishing. If anyone comes accross any good deals for motors or trailer we are looking. Most of all we really need some experienced advise on these 2 Lakes or other water close by. We live in the Atascocita area so we figure that Conroe and Houston would be the most convenient to fish.

two grown men and kids in a 14' is not a good idea. Be very careful. there are some folks who will not give you room and it will be a wet day. Can I recommend you get no less than a 16' deep wide with kids. be careful!

I would love to get a little bigger boat but I am having to work with what I have for now. I plan to only take 1 kid at a time so I am hopeing it won't be too bad.
Thanks for the caution and I will be very careful with them believe me.

doesn't Atascocita have a private launch?

Yes, they call it a marina but it is basically a decent sized ramp and a parking lot.

Yes...you have to pay $30 to use it or have a key to use it on top of the $350 per year HO fees and pool tags.

straight north of McKay bridge are some islands. you should be able to see them no problem. fish around those islands that have lots of bird roosting in them. Good catfishing there. Around the docks up as you go into the west fork hold nice bream and bass. Up by the lake Houston Parkway bridge are some little cuts and sloughs. try those. Use chicken liver or fresh shad that you can catch around the docks with a cast net.

Exactly, it's not too bad for the convenience of it and the security of your truck.

I guess a year aint bad. Pay the 30 so you can hug your shoreline. You don't want to get caught acroos the lake if a small storm blows in.

Thanks for the tips. We will give it a shot. We plan to post pics of the boat and fishing progress.

Did we hijack this thread??

Hello Fina:
One of my favorite spots on Lake Conroe is Caney Creek at Scotts Ridge on 1097 about 2 miles West of the bridge. It's a State park w/a decent ramp - costs $ 5.00 or a 12 month sticker for $ 25.00. It is a wide slough on the West side of the lake and fairly well wind protected. There is heavy jungle in the middle with lots of catfish and crappie. Boat paddles would work, but I suggest a 24 volt trolling motor. Good fishing 1 to 2,000 feet from the ramp.
The only downside is Wild Ask Hot Rodding Boaters making waves, but at night or weekdays it is very peaceful. Buy a 50# bag of range cubes at Tractor Supply for less than $ 5.00, tie up to a tree in the jungle, throw out 4 or 5 handfulls of range cubes, bait up with cheese dip bait or peeled shrimp or chicken livers or small chunks of beef heart or even minnows and be ready. Maybe I'll see you out there soon.
Thanks, John

Hey, I live in Newport, the other side of Lake Houston. I had a 14' Jon w/a 9.9 and never had a problem. Any size boat can be a problem in a storm on most lakes. Make sure there are jackets and air horn and have fun. If you ever need a place to launch, pm me and we can get together and you can launch on our ramp. I take my kids all the time to the bulk head and clean up on some nice cats. Buy a cheap depth finder and look for the river and fish the banks of the under water river... Good luck

Best luck I have had was beef liver and shad..

There's ALOT! of difference between the boat traffic at Newport ramp on the south end in the corner than up above McKat bridge on the west bank. Your right though. Around Newport bulk heads and along the north shore line between you and ski cove would be fine for a 14' Boat. Up by the power lines and norht of McKay, Be carefull!

Take this for what it's worth. You can spend months and waste a lot of time trying to figure this out. Myself and a couple of others hired a guide (butch Terpe) out of Anchorage Marina (Lake Conroe) for a half day. Butch is an excellent guide and will answer all questions thrown at him. He was a pleasure to be with and it will be well spent money.

We have thought about getting a guide to help with figuring out the lake and since we do not have a boat to use right now it may be the best idea to start with.
