Is it true that a good rain turns the catfishing on? I live on Lake houston and if that is the case we should be able to catch a few with all the rain we have had.
Thanks

Wind and rain have been helpful in my catfishing exp. Especially on Lake Houston. Went last Friday night, off the bulkhead. When the wind pick up the bite started picking up. I was always told that it was the surface of the water being disturbed, and the temp drop from rain. Eitherway, they are spawning in the shallows up near the shore, especially if there is a underwater creek or channel that will lead them to it.
Where are you at on the lake? I fish the east side of the dam without a boat, and GPS'd a spot out in the middle where the channel makes a "U" shape. It is pretty good... I'll be fishing tonight with my boy again.

I live in Lake Shadows. I was planning to take the kids to the park peir.
What have you been catching them on? I try to use shad.If I can catch em.
Have you fished the rocks on the east end of the dam?

I have been using chicken livers - Wal-Mart $1.10. Get bites every cast. Go to the meat department all the way to the right by the chicken, small round plastice container with blue emblem on top of lid. Use treble hooks if you have them.
this was last Friday night from 8:30 - 10:

i have been having trouble with keeping the chicken livers on the treble hooks and also i am thinking that the shad are eating them or something because i feel no bites but when i check my line after a while, there is no bait on it. whats up with that??

Well, I don't really know. All I know is I don't use corks, a slightly heavier wieght and keep a finger on the line the whole time. all this is if i am fishing the bank.

My grandfather always fished for cats. He would keep an eye on the barometric pressure. When it went above 30, he was out there. He said that the fish moved and fed best when it was around that pressure. Usually before a good rain. He would also tie a piece of thread around the liver after it is on the treble hook. He said that it keeps your bait longer. You will know for sure if something takes your bait, then. :)

My understanding is the fresh rain water increases natural current by convection of warm water vs. cool water and makes certain little worms and bugs come up from grasses, rocks, etc... Anyway, I like to try and hit my catfish spots after and during a rain if conditions are reasonable. I usually have good luck with nightcrawlers and frozen catalpa worms when fishing this pattern. I recently also try and find a bridge or other structure under the birds. I read that in TF&G that the catfish will set up under where the birds poop in the water. Tried it and had good success when getting skunked on my normal spots.Works for me and hope it helps each of you! Good Luck!
Don't freeze the chicken liver. Use it fresh, and use a pair of sharp sissors or a sharp knife to cut it. I drain the water from it, then it will stay on better. If you are fishing in the right spots, you won't have a problem detecting the bite. Just hold on.
