Howdy,
I'm fairly new to fly fishing and have a couple of questions. If I use a tapered 6X leader for trout do I still need to use a tippet or can I just I just use the leader? I have never fished the guadalupe and need some help with what kind of flies I shoud try. What kind of insects are on the hatch now? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
George

There's a flyfishing shop in Gruene - friendly folks. They have updated hatch info. for what's biting, recommend you stop by there. I usually use a yellow or green fuzzy egg (looks like the cheese the illegal fisherman use). Guadalupe has it's own set of fishing rules that can be found on TPW website.

I think a 6X leader would probably test out in the 5 lb range which should be OK for the technique I'm gonna describe to you: Tie a small stimulator/attractor wet fly to your leader-then tie a size 20 or 22 nymph directly to the curve of the hook shank of the attractor with a 4/6 lb test piece of tippet material about 8" below the top fly. Those trout above 16" are sometimes subtle strikers so a strike indicator will help detect those bites. They're gonna eat the nymph, main reason for the top fly is to keep the nymph on the bottom. Tight lines....
