If it works, here are the first three error message screens I get when I go to a site and an ActiveX function call makes IE6 shut down and reboot. There seem to be about 60 "modules" (It is a verbig error message) and then it goes into something else that is gibberish to me. What do I do to correct this problem. It is currently happening on TVGuide.com and Yahoo, both of whom have recently upgraded (This seems to have started after the upgrades, but I don't know if that matters).
I think you might have had a program overwrite something, so you can go here and get your updated Visual C++ Service Pack 6 runtimes (MSVCRT stands for MS Visual C++ Runtimes by the way):
http://download.microsoft.com/download/vc60pro/Update/1/W9XNT4/EN-US/VC6RedistSetup_enu.exe (http://download.microsoft.com/download/vc60pro/Update/1/W9XNT4/EN-US/VC6RedistSetup_enu.exe)
My only thoughts are that you might have a problem downloading (getting the error) if you do, then I think that if you run SFC and use the windows CD you could replace/repair that file.

Thank you Bill! - You alone are worth the cost of admission to TTMB! :)
I can do the download which I think goes to the "temp" folder as a zip type file, but then it asks where I want to install the files. Where do I want to put them?
(Also, you once mentioned about clearing the temp files. Did you mean the temporary internet file folder, or this "temp folder" full of temp. zip, zipz, zipi, etc. files?)
The download should be a self extract file and place everything where it is needed.

It isn't. It asks me where I want to place the extracted files, and I don't know where to tell it. So far I have MSVCRT files on:
C:\Windows\SYSTEM Msvcrt.dll - 273 KB
C:\Windows\SYSTEM Msvcrt10.dll - 206 KB
C:\Windows\SYSTEM Msvcrt20.dll - 268 KB
C:\Windows\SYSTEM Msvcrt40.dll - 64 KB
C:\Windows\SYSBCKUP Msvcrt20.dll - 268 KB
C:\Program files\Microsoft Reference\Automap\system Msvcrt40.dll - 319 KB
C:\Program files\Hewlett-Packard\PhotoSmart\Update\bin Msvcrt.dll - 261 KB
C:\Program files\Grisoff\AVG6 Msvcrt.dll - 249 KB
C:\Program files\ScanSoft\PaperPort\TWAINSRC Msvcrt20.dll - 248 KB
C:\Program files\KODAK\KODAK Software Updater\7288971\Program Msvcrt.dll - 261 KB
C:\Program files\KODAK\KODAK Software Updater\7288971\6.1.4.37-7288971L\Program Msvcrt.dll - 261 KB
Where else should it be?
Although almost none of them are the same size, I am suspiscious of:
C:\Windows\SYSTEM Msvcrt40.dll - 64 KB
because it is so much smaller than any of the others.

I still don't have a solution to this problem.
Internet Explorer reboots everytime an ActveX function tries to run on certain sites. It always occurs on TV Guide and is now doing it on Lavasoft (I can't download SE build 1.05). It also happens about 1/2 the time when I try and log into Yahoo. The recycle crash/glitch happens occasionally on some other websites as well.
Any more ideas?
I can't really find a solution to this, even asked around. I kinda think you might have a nasty hidden away in there somewhere. Check you internet/options/ look at third party extensions.
If not try this:
1. Repair Internet Explorer, if you go to add/remove programs, highlight internet explorer, click on remove, and then choose repair.
2. Replace the dll, i don't know but you may be able to do this through system file checker, although you will need the windows disk. go to start, run and type sfc, select extract one file and type in msvcrt.dll, click start, the save in box should already be filled in, incase its nor choose c:\windows\system (i think) and in the restore from select the path to your cd. Click ok, and save the backup when asked.
If you cant find the file on the disc, you can download it from here
http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/d...es.shtml?msvcrt (http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/d...es.shtml?msvcrt)
If it has to be done in DOS, download the file to your desktop first and give it a name, easy place to find it. I believe the syntax is as follows:
C:\Windows\Desktop\[the name of the file folder]\:>xcopy32 msvcrt.dll C:\Windows\system
I'm getting rusty so if this is not correct someone please jump in....

Nothing seems to work! :(
I can't even upgrade programs like AdAware SE because the download requires ActiveX and that causes a IE recycle loop. It doesn't even matter if I put the site in my "trusted" list or not.
Should I upgrade my windows? Would that do anything? I am running 98. If I change, what should I change to and how much should I expect to pay for it?
It should have worked. I would think, while you can still run windows, just go ahead and make all copies/backups, then bite the bullet and reformat and re-install windows 98. If you just wanted to upgrade the OS, make sure you computer will handle it ok, check the CPU speed, memory installed, what video card you are using or is it a onboard video, modem, sound card ect. (also any CD burners, Zip Drives, cameras and printers the list just goes on and on and not all will work with WinXP) Make sure to have all the drivers ready before you reformat.
One last thing to try is SFC (system file checker)
have your win98 disk handy
start, run type in SFC.EXE hit enter
place a check mark in the top box, go to advance, check files changed and deleted. Go back and hit START.
When a file is detected a corrupt, it will ask if you want to restore it, click yes and insert the win98 CD (if you have not) and choose browse as the restore from the Win CD
Do not restore files that are older if you know they were obtained through a update. They all list the dates. I know this might be hard if you have never done this and it takes a little while but if your planning on a reformat it can't hurt to try.

I had a similar problem and I corrected it by using Spyware Doctor 2.1. You can also find some utilities for windows at www.tucows.com (http://www.tucows.com) . I ran a check and deleted over 100 items then updated Windows XP an it seemed to fix me up.
