Hi John Humbert, I enjoy the forums, fishing reports and such. But I do enjoy talking, listening and some reading of stock information. I had a friend make a few recommendations they are ALD, KMP, TMA, and SJT. I purchased some ALD and have been happy with it so far. Most of my investments are in mutual funds (growth, value, overseas and high yield bond funds),a bond latter, and a few stocks.
What do you think of the stocks that I have listed and also what do you think about ETF'S for an investment?

Thanks TOOEXTREME

I'm not sure I want to get into rating stocks like some Jim Cramer. I am definitely not qualified to make stock assessments that quickly....Plus the fact in a public forum like this, such specific stock opinion can be too easily interpreted as recommendations to buy and/or sell...and I don't want the potential fallout from that.

The stocks I know, I know very well - because I've spent hundreds of hours getting to know them and I don't mind sharing knowledge I've learned. It is a completely different thing to make some "lightning round" assessment from a request.

That being said - the only one on your list that I have enough knowledge to offer any comment about is SJT. I trade SJT from time to time because I like the dividend. It is on my list for dividend strategy I talked about before - even though it is not "technically" a REIT - because (a) the dividend is high, (b) solid history of quarterly dividends and bonus divendend, (c) daily avg volume is good, and (d) it is based in Ft. Worth (I live in Plano) and I have some contacts who know someone, who know someone - etc.

TMA is on my watch list, but I have never traded it. When it first went on my list it had it's ups and downs, the dividend wasn't stable enough for me, and I was suspect ...that was some years ago when they were very new. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. With more years under their belt now, and seeming to stabilize a bit - I will start watching it a bit more closely.

ALD and KMP I just don't know anything about....Although I find it remarkable that ALD CEO has a $5.2 million salary!!! Where do I apply?

One thing I will say about any stock - you should get to know it - watch it for at least 3 months - read about it in message boards, and other sources - BEFORE making any investment.

One of my pet peeves is folks chasing "hot tip" stocks. It just never works out in the long run - and the short run is a krap shoot. Trading stocks, while the mechanism may be quick - the research and due diligence should never be!

And, as always, never buy or sell a stock solely based upon what I - or anyone else - says or by comments made in a chatroom or message board. Do your own research.

This should be a sticky!

I would like to add a couple of tidbits myself:

Find an investment plan that works for you and stick with it.

Do your research. If, after that, you still feel the need to ask others for their 'approval', statistics prove that you should probably NOT be in the market.

You asked John...but - Personally, I think ETFs are great investments, especially for semi-passive investors. I think its a very sound idea to devote a portion of your portfolio to index funds, and ETFs are a great way to do this with hardly any mgt. fees. Its an often qouted fact that less than half of all money managers beat the market, so why not ensure that at least a portion of your hard earned $$$ performs at least as well as the broad market? Now, I am far from a securities expert, just my $.02!!!!!
