BATON ROUGE, La. -- Proponents of turning patronage-laden southeast Louisiana levee boards into one state-controlled agency packed a Senate committee room Wednesday and were flatly told by two lawmakers that there is no hope for the proposal.
There is no hope for New Orleans in our lifetime. Fixing the corruption problems of the Levee Board is just not in the cards. The Governor has no control in the State. She is worthless.

SD, that is EXACTLY the reason the levees should be torn down and the place flooded and given back to nature.

The press has tried to put the blame for the levee problems on the Corps of Engineers and the Federal government. Not many people are even aware that the levee board existed or that it was responsible for inspection and maintenance of the New Orleand levee system. I lived in N.O. for 6 yrs and Slidell for 8 years and saw only one other agency that was as full of patronage, waste and incompetence as the levee board. That was the Lake Ponchertrain Causeway Commission which was just as bad.
A couple of people I know who were still in N.O. have told me that during 2004 the levee board bought all the board members new Buicks, invested in casinos and threw the most lavish holiday party held in the city. All this and just a few pennies directed at a deteriorating levee system.
