View Full Version : Really dumb question

I had to have this computer attended to by a 'doctor' a short while ago. Apparently, he subscribed me to the windows update automatic notification service.
It is quite annoying with the popups, and for the life of me, I cannot figure out how to unsubscribe to it. I don't see anything obvious on the update site.
Anyone have an idea how I can get rid of this 'service'? I suppose I am going to have to try and become more computer literate, like it or not.

Operating system are you using? Do you have a firewall?

The only firewall I have is the router. My ISP have a very good virus screen, but not infallible and only on email.
The issue is the constant " You have critical updates " coming from Microsoft. Seems like all the time but the reality is more like once or twice a day.

double click on the icon in the system tray. It looks like a globe with a windows sign. It will bring up a menu, hit next then unclick the "Keep my computer up to date" box. Save and close.

I will give it a shot. I assume the icon is only present when the popup notification occurs, as it is not there now.
I truly appreciate the help.

Yeah, the other option is going into the control panel Start->Settings->Control Panel and double click Automatic Updates. Uncheck the "Keep my computer up to date.." box and close.
Go to Start/Run, type msconfig and click OK.
Click Selective Setup
Click Startup tab.
On startup tab, you can uncheck auto updates
