I'm going to Sommerville this weekend. I've only fished this lake once before. anybody have advice on a likely spot to set some jugs and catch some catfish?

Well, I ll be the last you'd take advise from, but...I fished somerville for about 2 yrs, and probably could count the fish on my hands ( maybe hand). Anyway, here's my input: I thought jugging meant putting a jug out and letting it drift, then grabbing it later. Here's what I would do....there's a point..sandy beach..(I called it the party point where theres a state ramp and people go hang out....its got like a metal pipe around it ..and sandy beach). I would throw my jug out aways (since usually theres a lot of boats and jet skis in that area) then run back to the beach. Usually, there are alot of women around, so I d chase the women (or its a good place to hang out with family), but I d chase the women and watch other things bob...he he. If I got bored I'd run out and check jugs. (put them in sighting distance) I call it sport fishing....chase the blondes and heck maybe catch a fish. (maybe catch a blonde)
With the price of gas, and school started I am not sure of the crowd there anymore. Plus its been a couple of yrs. Sorry, I wasn't more of a help but you asked for advise. Good luck fishin'

you are talking about welsh park. not the best place to fish in the summer, unless you do it as stated above.

Whitey, i am guessing you are cloming from houston right? that makes the south side of the lake closest to you. I am guessing you are bringing a boat. If you launch at rocky creek, there is good access from there to the islands and creek beds in the middle of the lake. Just go into academy and look at the Top spot map of somerville and you will see the way those crek channels and stuff run around the islands. Deer and snake Island. Those seem to be the most popular spots for cats. Deer island has some really deep water on the south side, also some standing timber and what not. There are some big blues out there.

deebo, no I don't think its welsh park, and true its not the best place for cat hunting.....well depends on what cat. I digress. Its down the road by the shell station off 36. Turn on Roberts rd then hang right. There is a free boat ramp there, but as stated I don't think it a good area to really catfish. I agree with deebo. If serious I would look around I believe snake island. Theres some good areas around there.

If you put in at yegua park, you can go to the right and go to the dam just before you get there on the right is some 25ft water , I'v caught some in there on anchored juglines. right between the dam and the big island.

ah, for sure not welsh. just the description made it sound that way, with lots of people around. i know what ramp you are talking about. we launch there sometimes to fish or duck hunt on the walk in.

He's talking about Pecan Lake. That used to be the place go on Sundays when I was in high school. Mostly just Blinn and A&M folks these days. I wouldn't think the fishing would be very good there on the weekends due to large amount of boat/jet ski traffic. However, there is definitely some good scenery around.

Later.......Q
