Honda Develops First Airbag For Motorcycles

POSTED: 7:32 am CDT September 8, 2005

TOKYO -- Honda said it has developed the first airbag intended for production motorcycles. It plans to offer the feature on the new Gold Wing model due for sale in the United States beginning next spring.

Honda said the airbag, which inflates after sensors detect an oncoming crash, is aimed at reducing injuries in a head-on collision.

Honda said the airbag opens in front of the rider, reducing the speed at which they get thrown off the motorcycle. The idea is to lessen injuries when the rider hits the road or another vehicle.

There were some guys talking about this on one of the sport bike websites. Here's a piece that someone posted about them and a picture. Guess it could work on a big bike like that, it's almost as big as a small car anyway.

The 1800cc Gold Wing is Honda's largest motorcycle and carries a base price of $18,600 in the United States. Honda sold 12,000 of the bikes in North America last year, 1,600 in Europe and 270 in Japan.

Honda plans to offer the airbag on more motorcycles in future, but it acknowledged a number of hurdles.

The airbag works by absorbing energy from the forward-flying rider so the motorcycle itself needs to be heavy enough not to tip over, which could allow the rider to be thrown over the deployed airbag.

The airbag also requires space to blow up safely in front of the rider. The system cannot be mounted on a sport bike where the driver leans forward into the handle.

So how many of you guys have ever gone over the top? Me, I'd rather land in a big ol' boob rather than the side view mirror of the blue hair who just didn't see me. Been there, done that, I'll pass.
