Hey Guys,
The hard part about building a rod is to choose what colors go together. Can you help me out, and mention what colors work really well together? Also what rod would you go with for a wide 6/0 552/553? I have a 9/0 on a 553, and a Penn Long Beach 68 on a 552 (same size as a wide 4/0). Just don't know what rod for the wide 6/0.
Thanks

I look at magazine ads a lot to choose my colors. They usually consist of a couple of major colors along with a different color for the lettering. I like using the main colors for my guide wraps or base wraps and so on. I might use the color of the letters as my trim.
If you are casting that 6/0, I'd say go with the 552. The rod I have the shark inlay on is built for a 6/0, but it is strictly for yakking baits. It is a 9.5 foot calstar 550 bh. It is built with the reel seet low on the butt and it has a long foregrip. I think the light tip and string butt section of this rod will be a little foregiving as far as leverage is concerned. Also, the long length will keep your line high and help keep it out of the weed and off the sand bars.

I personaly like going with shades of one color for chevron designs and bold contrast colors for diamonds and any out lineing with either black, white or the metalic threads. Alot of times I will go look at other custom rods on mudhole.com or rodbuilding.org for good color combinations, or go stand at the thread rack at cut-rate looking dazed and confused matching color combinations I like. The thread I use is Gudebrod brand-NCP,the last rod I built had these colors and sizes, A6779 med. green for underwraps on eyes, C5896 dark green for guides and overwraps. I also used both colors in A size for the butt wrapped chevrons with A sized gold metallic 9000, green/gold 58966 for out lines and trim around guides. Good luck in choosing.
