anybody do it? i've never spearfished but i'm an excellent swimmer and cert. diver. I really don't want to hassle w/tanks and prefer to freedive when the oportunity presents it's self while fishing offshore. what type of gun would i need? hoping to nail a decent mahi or wahoo? good luck right???

Free diving weed lines are great although it can be very dark. Skim the edge and you could shoot a dorado. Just be carefull and not shoot something that will give you a ride to Cuba or take your spear gun. I have 2 biller 48 specials I rigged with cable . ( got tired of buying new shafts, tips, and lanyards when when diving wrecks or rigs). The woodys are great because when you shot a fish the gun will float up w/o the shaft and help keep you from getting tangled.
Good luck

I would be very cautious about shooting a big wahoo if its not a kill shot. On a short riding rig its going to be a heck of a jerk when he pulls all the slack! Reminds me on the kid showing off and trying to grab on to a moving train......he runs up and grabs the rail and gets his arm yanked off! :(

T1F - for freediving you don't use a short riding rig - you use a freeshaft that is attached to a bungee float line and a float, or use a reel.

somewhere I've got a pic of a friend that shot a 100# wahoo. It's huge!
