i was wondering if you can make your own shock cord, and if so how?

Mine is made from a wishbone straightened and cut down and crimped on the cable.

Tall1fin is right. It can be done, but it's not really worth the hassle for the little $ that you'd save doing it yourself. Several on-line outfits sell them reasonably priced. Some of them are configured to allow you to reuse them when changing the cable, so it should last you a while as long as you don't lose it. Lots of spearfishermen that I dive with (including myself) don't even use a shock cord. Cutting the cable length is more critical, though. If you take your time, you'll be OK.

I got mine done at the scuba store, it cost me I think around 15.00 , that was a few years back. Well worth it, considering a new spear and hear will run you around 60.00. The coral on the leg will eat the nylon through in a few runs.

They'll fix you right up. I use the universal and keep a spare. You can buy the big swivels at any tackle shop or Wally World a lot cheaper.

I second scubaru on spearfishinggear.com they have everything a man would need to rig a nice shock cord setup. I think your better off rigging your own gun instead of leaving it up to a dive shop that's not going to be with you out there if you have problems and need to replace one. It's always good to have double of everything when spearfishing. We learned that the hard way after loosing two shock cords, shafts, & tips. I have two guns know which is probably your safest route.
