Pulled up to the Cagle boat ramp around 7:30am. TPWD was just heading out in an airboat.

Talked to a couple down from kansas for a while. They were really interested in the kayak fishing idea. Paddled across a dead calm lake to a group of islands. Fished 6-10' of water early with little action. Paddled out to about 15' of water and dropped 3 jugs, baited with liver, live perch, and some cut shad I caught in the cast net that morning. I then headed for a visible tree in about 15' of water and dropped some catfish chum and a marker. Headed out to some other spots really just exploring while my chum disolved. Returned to the baited tree and caught a few small cats around 13" right way. Looked over at my jugs and one was about 100 yards away from the others. Chased it down and put a nice 3lb blue on the stringer. Headed back to my tree and caught a couple of 2lb channel cats. Saw another jug going crazy. I start heading for it and notice a fish thrashing around on the surface. I was about 20' away and could see that it was about 3.5' gar. A couple seconds later it was gone. Not sure what I would of done with it when I got to it. Decided to pull that jug in and mainly fish rod n reel, since the action was pretty steady. After baiting a couple of different holes and a few hours later I was done. Ended up catching 8 cats from the yak and another 3 on the jugs. Only brought home 4 in the 2-4lb range and had them for supper last night!

Cool.

Next trip up that way try shallow early, right up against the lilly pads on the south west end.

Extreme Angling. That's what it would have been had you got a hold of that gar. Sounds like an exciting kayaking trip.

Sounds like you had a good time!

Take a pair of channel locks with you and if you get a gar just pop him in the head and he will stop moving pretty quick.

Cool, glad you got on some. Listen to the above words of wisdom from the catfish man himself, you'll be glad you did.
