quick trip last sunday afternoon

did a little freedivin' last sunday. not bad for 2 hours. it was fun. that's my biggest fish free diving. how much ya'll think he weighs?

That is a nice Ling. My breathe holding sucks so I don't think I can do much freediving. Last weekend I went down to about 15 foot and had to come right back up cause I was abou tout of breathe.

I'm gonna guess 25-30# (do you know what it weighed or are we just guessing?)

Is that a rockhind if so how deep did you go to get him

speckle- i didn't weigh it but was almost 50" from tip to fork of tail and almost 56" to the end of him. i was guessing 40-45lbs too. that pic doesn't really justify him.

dlove- yea rockhind/strawberry grouper . . .aren't they the same thing? i just know they are great to eat! he was about 15 or 20 under.

those triple tail suprised me . . . they are only about 4 ft under and good sized ones

I suck at judging fish weights until they are hanging from a scale, then I can get close.

we all thought the big king in this thread was about 45# - turned out to be 30#

I'm surprised at the tripletails - anyone I've ever seen is always very skittish.

We went off out of matty. Ended up about 35-40 miles out and thought it was going to be a great day b/c of the first three hook-ups at the first stop. It was a snap, hoo, and big AJ. We were all pumped!

After about 3 or 4 more hours of catching nothing good, I decided to stick my head over board at a place on the way back in. Saw 7 or 8 ling (can't remember). I was like heck yea! One ling (the biggest there) already had a leader broken off in its mouth and wouldn't bite again so decided just to go get it. Threw a special lure at it and a buddy worked it right to me! And BANG! One ling in the boat. ended up shooting some more snaps there and seeing a big bull dolphin about 30-35 lbs but couldn't get a shot.

It was getting late so we pushed on home. I'm teaching a guy about fishing and was in the back of the boat when he passed up a pipe. I told him " big ling hang out around those". he was like BS and "do you want me to turn around?" I told him i think we should. Did the Baywatch thing out of the boat and about 10 sec later big ling shower up out of the bottom. I had to dive under the boat, come up and get a breath, and then go back down for him. It was worth it! NICE ling in the boat! we decided to hit the rest of the single pipes on the way back in after him. They produced the two triple tail you see in the pic.

It was a bad day to start but then he got to go home with some fish.
