I would like to purchase a wade fishing rod and reel. I currently have plenty of pier/surf/jetty outfits but tossing artificials all day would wear me out. I notice a lot of baitcaster reels in pics I've seen. I use spinners mostly so would need to learn the conventional or baitcaster types. Also line weight for tossing artificials would be helpful.

You can get a good combo at Academy for a decent price. Curado 200 and whatever rod they match it up with. Usually some kind of All Star or Castaway or some knock-off there of. But a respectable setup, none the less.
For a much better rod you can go Castaway HG40, or a custom rod like a Laguna Texas Wader (sponser on this board). Depends on how price sensitive you are. If you are going to be fishing alot and doing alot of casting go with top quality and lighter weight. Your shoulder and elbow will thank you later.
For reels the Curado is the standard. Chronarch is somewhat better and priced accordingly. The Calcutta reels are equally as good but are not 'low profile' like the Curado/Chronarch reels. Preference.
Until someone proves to me that monofilament can't catch fish, I will continue to use it. Trilene Big Game in 10-12 pound test is sufficient for almost all inshore fishing.
Good luck!

I use both monofilament and braided lines. The only thing I do not like about mono line is it has too much stretch to it. I also like the braided line cause it is smaller diameter. Use both but prefer certain types based on the situation and circumstances.

The sensitivity is great and you can use a smaller diameter line, but......I seem to get a real big rats nest with these lines when casting (curado) into the wind. Any secrets to the casting? Tighter brakes, tighter thumb?

All I can say is Shimano Chronarch MG 50/Laguna Rod "Texas Wader" I just got my 2nd MG 50 today to finish my combos. This is about the lightest combo you can find on the market. I use 10# Stren Magnathin on this particular rod. I haven't found a better wade fishing comination.

I use the curado with a castaway rod in the surf. I use half the brakes and the rest I thumb very slighlty and have not had any serious backlashes since doing this. I also adjust for the weight of the lure and make sure it barely drops when free spooling.

I recommend a Kistler medium light Helium and a Curado super free.
