View Full Version : Brake setup
I have a bunch of different Shimano reels--old green Curados, new Curados, and new Citicas. I have never had anyone show or tell me how you should set up your brakes on a new reel. I just kind of experiment and when I find something that works, I leave it there until I get too many backlashes and then I adjust. But I noticed that I have 2 reels that have all the brakes all the way out and I do have some issues. How do I fix that? Do up put heavier brakes in? Could you explain it for me?

I find backlashes to be caused by the settings of both the brakes and the reel clutch.
The first thing I do when changing lures is check the free fall of the new lure when the reel is put into free spool. I like to have have the clutch set so that the lure will just begin to start falling under its own weight when the thumb bar is depressed. If it drops quickly, then tighten up the clutch. If it does not fall, loosen up the clutch. You should be able to find a happy medium in between fast fall and no fall.
As far as the brake weights, I usually have either 2 on/4 off (for heavier lures) or set it 3 on/3off (for lighter lures). I just make sure to have the on and offs spaced evenly around the spool to keep it in balance.
This set up may keep me from getting maximum distance on casts, but it does prevent most backlashes. I hope this helps and I am sure there are others that will be able to explain it better.

This was a good description but the proper term is spool tension knob, not reel clutch.
It could also be the rod that you are using for the lure you happen to be throwing. The rod action/power could be too heavy and not allowing the rod to load properly on the cast. This will result in a back lash.

You have this backwards. 3 on would be for heavier lures. 2 on for lighter lures.
