My bro and two nephews fished sun up in the surf....they caught a few small sharks and two jacks. One jack was 25 lbs and took young Jake my nephew 30 mins to reel in on a 5500. He said it was a tougher fight than his 35 lb king we put him on earlier in the year. Jake is 14...its been fun getting him onto the fish...he also has a few big reds under his belt from this year...one at 45 lbs. I don't think I was cathing fish like that when I was 14.
Uncle "D" thats me ....arrived late and hit the water about noon.
Water was clear green flat and a west/north wind depending...shad/mullet everywhere....I started out with a popping rig with a white plastic shrimp tale....first pop and I was into a 15 min fight on a fish I could not turn....I'm thinking a jack. Lost the whole rig...retied then did it all over again...another 15 min. fight....this one I was winning....he spooled me but I regained 3/4 of it back..... until the fish went skitz-o the rod double over in a snap and the line broke....I think a shark got him...whatever he was.
Maybe another jack...I say that because they pulled as hard as a tuna. After that, I boated about 5 giant gaftop. One was inhaled by a 6 foot shark 5 foot from the yak....left me the head and a trail of guts.....pretty wild....I see the shark hit the gatop and his bite was so clean cut, I hardly felt it tug the line.
Not much more after that...3 small sharks....plenty of sharks all round me and some were over 6 feet.
All in all a fun day hooking big powerfull fish. Would have liked to seen a bull or a speck....no biggie. Maybe hit it again next weekend.
Was glad to hear the missing boaters were found!!!! Thank God!
Hope your resting well tonight guys!
