I need 2 or possibly 3 divers to spearfish (or just dive) this Saturday. I'll be leaving out of POC in my 27' Wellcraft w/t200 Yamahas and I have all safety gear except a liferaft or O2. We'll dive two tanks on the deep rigs and then dive the 3rd tank on a shallow rig or possibly a weedline. I'm looking for divers that have logged at least 50 dives and preferably you dive with a computer. There will be the usual duties such clean up when we get back in. Gas, ice and miscellaneous expenses will be about $75 per person and you are welcome to stay at my house. Send me a PM with your level of experience along with a phone number if you're interested.

Sounds like a good opportunity. The drive is a hual from Houston but I would be game for it. I've got approx. 200 dives, PADI Divemaster 10/03/93. I also own a 23ft Walk-Around Trophy Bayliner, twin 120's so I know what it's like on the boat owner side. Sometimes it's hard to find friends to go fishing, finding some decent divers for spearfishing is from what I've found pretty difficult. Seems to be a small group.
I'll drop you a message with more info. Keep me posted. Rgds! TrophyFish'n

If only I had enough dives under my belt. I am still a rookie. But give me a few months and I will be ready.

Well, so far it's TrophyFish'n and myself. We still need a couple divers or.... one diver and one fisherman would also work.
BTW - I intend to take several dive trips summer so for those of you that couldn't make it this weekend, I'll keep you in mind for future trips.

Justin,
You need to get re-certified and then let's go stick some fish. I have an extra speargun now that my new one arrived this week.

Spec - you're going to like this. I got a 55-inch Wong Carbon Fiber Hybrid. You wanna shoot it? We need to go sometime.
the re-certified thing is basically i need to go back and get a refresher course or something along the lines. i got certified about 3 years ago and never did another dive after the check off dive.

I've been busy cooking fish for friends and neighbors here recently and haven't sat down to write about this weekend.
First off, Hang Time runs a Top-Notch operation from his hospitality to his boat preparation and operation. I was thoroughly impressed with the weekend and that Hang Time was a really nice guy as well. I'm sure that Bevo-hunting-Fishing who went out with us as well (I believe that is the correct screen name but correct me if I'm wrong.) will say the same thing here.
We caught some prettly large AJ's (at least Jerry did) and a few snapper and even a small dolphin fish. Spearfishing at the Baker rigs didn't impress me however but that's not Hang Time's fault. Just the fact that the fish were fewer there than I've seen in other areas/other rigs. We saw maybe 3 big snapper down there and several large AJ's. Getting a decent shot at those guys is a challenge as they were just on the edge of our range. They're always just a bit curious but get spooked easily and seem to always turn around right on the edge of speargun range. Hang Time had an AJ on the second dive but the tip came back out. That happens some times.
All in all a great trip and great fishing. As far as pictures go, I took a few and sent them to Hang Time and will let him post them as it was his boat. If Hang Time is looking for people in the future I would definitely go again if I have the time.

Thanks for the kind words - glad you had a good time. Feel free to post up some pictures. I looked at them last night and noticed that most of them were blurry. I suspect that the suspended particles in the water might have confused the rangefinder on the camera or it might have been from the lack of natural lighting which was being diffused by the overlying green water at the surface. I appreciate the effort. We'll get some good ones when the bluewater comes in.
I thought about what you'd told me about some of your past dive trips on the shallow rigs and agree that I should take the time to dive the shallow rigs again. My buddies and I have been focusing on the deep rigs recently in an effort to stick big AJ's. It's really cool being down at 150' and having a group of 40-60 lb AJ's swim right up to you. The adrenelene rush keeps you coming back for more. Unfortunately that style of diving really limits what we see.
I have a trip planned for June 10th with the usual group of guys that I dive with. We'll probably try the A133's. I'll post up the results after the trip.

Finally I have taken the time to put some pictures on the site here.
Jerry caught a large Amber Jack early in the day. Nice fish.
Jerry Handing off my Magnum 450XHD to me in the water. Some large Barracuda guarding the shallow areas of the rig. (lower vis from 40ft to surface.)
A nice side view of a few barracuda.
Hangtime reloading.
A good trip even though the visibility could have been better.

snapper and so on. Try swimming backwards. Large fish (in my experience) tend to follow you as long as you are moving away. When they come in range.....SPLAT! I've logged dives in several places but I still love the GOM!
I need to load the Outcast with some tanks soon!
Hope the tip helps.

have you ever seen a "sombra" mask from Picasso? They have shaded lenses so the fish can't see your eyes.
eye contact with fish is very threating to them since you are bigger than they are. I've been wanting to get one and try it on snapper. I know they work well for wahoo and YFT.

True, try not to look directly at the fish, also try not to swim directly at them just look at them from the corner of your eye untill itīs time to shoot
