Stoner has a new E-tec 150 on his cat and it has a surge in it plus the standard over heat problem that has been fixed they say.. But it surges when u set the throttle at 3200rpm it will surge up and down to between 3600-3700 rpms he has had it in the shop for it and thay say its just going to do it becuase its jumping from a low to high inj setting or some **** I have never been in a boat not even carb motor that is set up right do that and thier not be a reason? I dont work on them so I dont know but it sure dosnt sound right...the cooling issue BRP sent out T-stats with a weaker springs

I run mine between 3000 and 3200 when cruising around looking for fish and it never surges like that. Must be another issue or something new in the software. I never had the overheating issues with mine but still added the larger intakes to be on the safe side but it does cause it to catch more weeds.

They should be able to hook it up to a computer and find out the issue.
That motor is preety advanced for them to say, that is an inherint problem with that particular motor.
I would be more weary of the shop than the motor, it might have an injector issue

If you have lost confiidece in your shop call Evinrude and express to them that you are displeased. They should send a tech. rep. to fix your problem, that doesnt sound right what your shop told you. I had similar problem with my 07' 225 e-tec, replaced computer fixed problem, shop spent a month chasing problem, tech came down and fixed it in about 3 hours.

I follow E-tec preety closley, as I owned one as well.
A great mechanic here in houston is Stone and sons Marine.
Outboard Jack has only seen a few issues with the E-tecs, and All have been different, but he has gotten some practice. He said enough of them hav'nt come in to really get good at fixing them. (which is a good thing for the brand)
You might try calling him, and tell him you got his name off of 2cool.
Get his opinion, he is a stand up guy, and one of the oldest repair facilities in Houston, @ 30+ yrs

Please let us know what the outcome was.

It could be the throttle position sensor.

Paragod, I stand corrected. When I went out Thursday I ran my motor at 3500 and it would surge to 37-3800. :headknock

I read a post where someone had the same mid range surge problem and it ended up being the lift pump. The pressure was fine at low and high rpm, but mid range the lift pump did not put out enough pressure.

No I probably won't mess with it since I rarely run at that range. I just ran it out of curiosity at 3500 after reading your thread. Keep us posted and if they do find a fix then I will take it in

Has anyone with this problem found the fix? My small block 200 has just started doing this (~38 hours). Around 3200 rpm or so, which is a good cruise for my boat, will result in a 400 rpm surge every few seconds. It seems to do it more in rough water, which thanks to this wind I've had lots of time to experience. The E-tec technician at my local shop last week did not have the answer.

Is this only happening to cat type hulls? I ask as I was in a Tran cat hull and at certain RPM's the hull was "releasing" or surging back and forth until the speed changed.
Just asking, motor problems are sort of like a mystery to be solved.

If this surging is mostly on cat type hulls, the problem may be water flow around the prop.
Similar "surging" happens in some pontoon boats when the aerated water between the logs (hulls) causes the propeller to slightly ventilate on and off. The sound of the motor changes as the prop grabs and slips a little and that can mimic an engine surge. Normally you only see about a 100 or 200 rpm change at a particular trim setting.
My friends new 175 etec does the same thing. Mechanic told him it is injection pressure switching between high an low or something. Said it was normal.

I can tell you that it does not just happen on cat hulls. Mine is a 21' Nautic Star, shallow vee with no tunnel. I didn't notice the behavior until I tried to make a long run in rough water. The boat handles the waves nicely running about 3000 - 3200 rpm. But the surging bumps it up about 400 rpm with a noticeable increase in speed, so I doubt it is prop slip. Until those rough days, I spent most of my running time above 4000 rpm and never noticed the problem.

Maybe the surging problen is caused by your prop loosing it's bite in the water causing it to rev up a little. Just a thought ,but that could be it. Try a prop with a little more cup to see if the problem stops.

Get it checked out and see if there are any map updates available. At low RPMs the computer tells the engine to go into stratified mode which fires the spark plugs at a very rapid rate. Then when you get over a certain RPM say around 3200 it goes in a homongenus mode which cause the spark plugs to fire slower at a certain instance.
You might be getting right in between these modes and causing a surge. A map update can fix this issue, if it doesnt then a good dealer can go through some other steps to find out your issue and fix it.
