This fish was caught on day 2 of the Mcdonalds big Bass Splash Last weekend.

BUT the excitement of the day came in with Sam Rayburn (http://outdoorintelligence.amivisions.com/perl/oims_action.cgi?clientid=2043&lid=422&zoom=1&map=0) angler, John Cure, who set his hook on a 1pm bite that began pulling his 21 ft Champion Bass boat around. John immediately noted to his partner, Melvin Hensley, of Beaumont, "I don’t think this is a bass.... GET THE NET!!! Then after a 10 to 15 minute "toe-to-toe" battle, John was finally able to pull his fish alongside the boat. "WOW" was all they could say after viewing an almost 4ft long Opelousas catfish. John hooked the big fish on a DD-14 crank bait while fishing an 8-to-12ft hydrilla patch in the Buck Bay area. The catfish was estimated to weigh 70 lbs by tournament director Bob Sealy as they displayed the huge fish to the applauding crowd. And being that John caught his big catfish on 10 lb test line he’s getting the monster checked out for possibly being a line class World Record. He also plans on releasing the huge catfish back into the lake after he gets it weighed on certified scales.

It still amazes me how cats will hit a crankbait. I caught one a bit smaller (37#) on a 6-8 ft, Bomber crankbt. last year.
Good post FS.

Yeah I have caught all kinds of cats on lures. The most are the ops though. They only eat live bait. I am sure they are opportunistic feeders too and will eat some dead bait if they are hungry. I have never caught one on dead bait though. Not sure I have even heard of it. If he didn't win anything in the torney he sure got some good eats!

That's a great story.

You NEVER want to stock a flathead(op) in a pond with other fish including LMB. If you stock one, you will end up with one fish left, the op. If you stock two, you will likely still end up with only one fish left, the larger of the two ops originally added to the pond.

They are top-of- the line predators, and a great fish.

That reminds me of the time when me and a friend were fishing a Skeeter Boats owner bass tournament on Conroe years ago. He hooked a big fish that took him forever to get to the boat. When we finally got a look it was a 7lb hybrid foul hooked in the tail. We thought we had the tournament winner.

What did the scale say the cat weighed? It did not look like a 70# cat in the photo to me.
