I will be hunting axis does but if I see a nice buck I am going to take it. My question is... If I shoot a Buck in velvet how should I take care of him until I get him to a taxidermy? I am unsure about the velvet antlers. Any hunting tips to give me a better edge on the Axis buck would help. I will be hunting over feeders.

I would think you would just need to be careful and not damage the velvet. You might find one hard antlered too. They shed and grow antlers at different time of the year.

My brother shot his in velvet and we got it in the deep freeze pretty fast in addition don't get any blood on them or it will stain the velvet. The taxidermy took care of it from there. Turned out really nice. The main thing is to get it to the taxi as quick as possible. Good Luck, they are really nice in velvet and also nice hard horned.

Should you see an axis in velvet make sure he is tipped out. By that I mean look at his antler tips and make sure they aren't round. If they are round they still have alot of growing to do and will be real meaty. Have your taxi freeze dry the velvet instead of chemical cure. Just keep it as cold as possible.. GOOD LUCK!!!GET A BIGGEN!

Try not to scratch the velvet they will bleed out, if you shoot a axis in velvet they make a cool skull mount, if you arn't gonna shoulder them. I embalmed a set talk about a cool looking set of horns. The tips of the horns were still really rounded too, did this about 5-years ago the velvet is still holding on strong too.Good luck!
