Jan. 5 I had the pleasure of fishing with Jenny & Willie O'Meara of Ireland. They are here on an extended vacation. The conditions left a lot to be desired and we knocked off at 1:30. It was very cold, raining, and down right miserable. I had on Gore-tex and they both had on a poncho, and we dang near froze.
They made the best of it catching four fish topped with a 24#. All fish caught on rod & reel using cut shad.

Jan. 6 What a difference a day makes. It started out dreary but cleared quickly. The weather improved to down right nice by noon. The fishing improved as well with Jenny putting a 31 & 32 in the boat. The total for today was nine blues and one hybrid.

Willie hooked into a nice hybrid.

In the last three years, clients or I have landed eight state record fish and ten water body records. Together we currently still hold ten records.

Thanks for the report, those are trophy blues for sure, and the clients will have some good memories of big blues on a cold day. Just curious, why does the cold weather bring the bite on with those really big bluecatfish? My idea is that all of the baitfish id so cold that they can't get out of the way of those big boys who have so much more body mass to insulate them, so they can still bust a move on the bait. Like to know what a pro has to say about it. because in all of the lakes in Texas that i know of deep winter is the time to catch big blues.

In my opinion, for what its worth:
Not all the fish are dong the same thing, some can be caught in shallow water, some on mid depth humps and points, but lots of bigger fish go deep. Whoever said 90% of the fish are in 10% of the water probably told other misleading stories.
The big fish that go deep will group up on creek bends and channel edge drop offs. These fish will change sides and locations as the weather changes. The biggest key is being in an area that is comfortable for them with plentiful bait or food fish nearby, or above. As in any type of fishing that I know anything about structure is the key. Structure can be anything on the bottom, a tree, lay down, small hump, or channel edge. No matter how small structure is, it will at times hold fish and bait fish.
This is the same reason bird fishing is successful during the winter months, the fish relate to structure and food. The fish get almost lethargic in the colder months and don't move around much and will not chase bait.
