Am I in the catfish lounge? Well, I did catch a catfish. nice one. About 10 lbs. BUT he got away. I was trying to fish out my net to fish out the fish, and off he went. This was while I was whitebass fishing but I knew I had caught a catfish. So that my catfish story.
Now, to the white bass. If you haven't been, you'd better get there. Hot is the word. Over the last two weekends, I ve seen nothing but smiles and tans. I've caught over 500 whites in the last two weeks. Didn't say I kept them, but I caught them. Here's what I ll tell you now. They are in 15 ft range dropping off to 22 ft. So, that means several areas that I know of. Want my favorite spot? can't do that. But I was on it last weekend, and ask the boats around me what they saw. Generally, a nice white bass every cast. I was throwing them back. Only keeping the monsters. So I told the boats to anchor up near me and where to cast. Finally, I couldn't stand it no more and left. the fish were still biting.
On another day, I went to that spot and caught quite a few then the whites turned off, and I headed out to walker's lake area. Man, what a blast. Sat there for about 2 hours catching whites there. And from the stories I got everybody else has been catching them too.
Several times out the bass have schooled around me. And one time the screen on my depth finder turned black from all the shad under the boat if that will tell you something. That was Wed. a week ago I believe right before the strom blew in . Remember the big strom last week on Wed. Yea, well I was wearing out the whites again as the black clouds rolled in. Then I felt that first cool breeze. I jumped in the driver seat and hauled.....needless to say, I was soaked before I made it to penwaugh.
Hope thats helpful. Oh and if it stays hot like it has I am sure the fishing will only get better.

I got a late start this year due to engine problems. The quantities for me have been good. The sizes however, have not. I have caught very few over 13". Have you found bigger fish?

And yes, cats will really take the slab spoons, usually blues for us. We do a lot of catch & release on the whites too, especially this time of year. I prefer to fill the freezer in the spawn, cooler weather for filleting.

BEC, it sounds like you have hit a good bunch of whites and if I have it right you fish more North up the lake than I do. Which means the big whites, and really the bulk of the schools, haven't made it down to my spots on the south end yet. Well that is good news to me because me and Saltwaterassain are going Monday to give them a try and they may be down my way by then. It's been an unusal year for the whites, they didn't make a real strong spring run, or if they did they were quite about it. Whitebassfisher was about the only one who had good reports during the spawn. I made some trys up White Rock Creek but never hit them right. Now they are slow making their way down the main lake. So fishing should just get better as the summer goes on. But heck, I'll be recuperating from the doc most of the summer.
Normally we are catching towsacks full by now at the hump, and it's really been kind of off and on there so far.

yea whitebassfisher you have been missing a good year. I ve heard several people talking about catching whites. Most are still small, even though they are 10 ". I don't even miss with them unless they are the big ones. But I was on alot of big ones the other day on the 190 road bed, even at that I was only keeping the monsters and limited out then. Last year I just couldn't find them, also I ve jigged this year and last year I was trolling. the cost of gas has stopped my trolling.
shad, a friend fishs around pineland and said he found them on the back side of pineland. I am sure in the same depth....15 ft dropping off. I think he said he tried the hump but didn't have any luck. But even at that the time, he did fish he caught a 100 or so. So the whites should be down at your end. I know I found them out at walkers lake which isn't to far from pineland and they where schooling out there also. With this heat, I bet the whites are hotter than ever.

I'm new to the lake and I usually fish the White Rock creek areas, I'm coming down to fish for the next two weeks from the 9th through the 19th. I don't know anything about the main lake at all but hope to run across one of you guys and maybe get some help finding some good whites. I'll have an open seat in my boat a few days, there are only going to be two of us fishing this next week so if anyone wants to go along and share some info on where to get into some good white bass for a free trip drop me a note. We just want to learn more of the lake and with the price of gas we would like to keep our learning and driving around not knowing anything about where to go to a minimum.

When the fish are hitting like they should this time of year, I believe slabbing or jigging will beat the heck out of trolling; it's not unusual to catch a couple or 3 just while a troller is turning around. But you know what they say about opinions....
