Just installed a 24v bow mount trolling motor on my boat I was at the store looking at the deep cycle batts. Some were the size and weight of a regular car batt.(30-40 LBS) But some were the bigger 70 pounders. What's the difference? I am trying to keep the weight down if possible.
THANKS!

Spend the extra money and go with the Gel Cell batteries. You won't be sorry. They are expensive, but well worth it. IMO

I agree with ghost.
To answer your question, the bigger batts hold more juice and give longer run times. Having said that, I've never even come close to running mine down in a single day of heavy use. Save the weight and get the smaller batts.

Forget the gel, go with agm--if you want the best.

If your going to use your trolling motor and rely on it as a fishing tool, go with the larger batteries, better to have more than not enough. As far as gel vs. conventional they both fail, at least with the gel you won't have to worry about water. Big or small batteries if you use it "heavy" in a day of fishing you will run them down, so keep that throttle off wide open , and it will make your power last much longer.

for lead/acid
there are 2 common case sizes ....group 24 and group 27
make sure they say "deep cycle" if they are for troll motors , they are made with heavier plates and are made to cycle thru deep discharges.
recharge them when you get in with slow 2 amp charge and no more than 10 amps, they will last longer. ck fluid levels.
try not to let them flop around in a battery box , it is hard on the batt. and slings acid around in your storage.
