my wife and myself are trying to plan a nice springtime ride through the hill country to check out the blue bonnets and other wild flowers... neither of us have ever seen them, and she, as well as me, is a nature lover. we were originally planning on taking a cruise (ship), but have decided to do something on the bike instead... thinking about maybe staying at a bed and breakfast for a night or 2, it will be around her birthday and our anniv. and who knows what else, would probably like to make maybe a 3 or 4 day trip... have checked many sites on the net, and went look around in barnes and nobles, but can't really find what i am looking for, so figured with all the knowledgable folks on here, somebody is sure to help out.... what i would like is some recommendations, as to maybe a nice (maybe romantic) B & B, when exactly would be a good time to go riding through there for the blue bonnets (march or april or when), and does anyone have any good routes that they like to take for scenery, preferably back roads, or at least not interstates and other super busy roads... it will be an all bike trip for us, neither of us has ever done a motorcycle trip like this and we are pretty excited about it....
also, would like to invite anyone that would care to join us, to please let us know, i think it would be even more pleasurable to have others riding with us...
thanks for any and all advice....
Willie

hey wild willie, where abouts do do live. The Brenham area is one of most popular areas for bluebonnets. I live between Brenham and Chappell Hill in the Bluebonnet subdivision. Monday afternoon I get the pleasure of picking up a new H-D road king. Me and the wife are going to start getting into the swing of riding also, perfect area to ride. The Austin area is excellent also. There is alot of good paved FM roads with little stores strung out to have a cold one and take a break. Around april is the best time for the wild flowers. As far as B&Bs the little towns out around usually have them.

oh, almost forgot, congrats on the new ride, searrow.... maybe we can hook up while we are up around there... don't have a harley myself, nothing against em, and would probably like to have one someday, but right now got me a nice yamahoppy.... i (we) enjoy the h*ll out of it.... gets us on 2 wheels and ridin down the road... we just got started ourselves not long ago (couple of months), and haven't really ridden very much, seems like everytime i get a chance the weather is crappy, but the few times we have gotten out, we have really enjoyed it.... good luck with the new ride....

Be sure and check out the Antique Rose Emporium in Independence (near Brenham). They usually have a whole field of bluebonnets. Washington on the Brazos is also nice.

hey darrell,
thanks for the link.. looks great, something like what we're wanting to get into.. checked out a recomendation from someone else, a place called wildseed farms in fredricksburg, and now it is at the top of my wifes list as somewheres she wants to check out, it has a butterfly house, and she wouldn't let me live it down if we didn't make it there.... she crochets and sells it on ebay, have to say she is very talented, but she says that she gets her inspirations/ideas from butterflies, birds and flowers... so who am i to deny inspiration.....:) anyway, would look forward to ya'lls company, right now i think we are planning on the week of april 11th.... probably leaving out the morning on the 9th (saturday) or the morning of the 10th... we defnitely will not be in a hurry, just out to have a nice ride, relax, and get away from as much as possible....

I lived in the Marble Falls area for quite some time and will give you a few suggestions for great rides out there:
1. Park Road 4 between Marble Falls and Burnet heading towards Inks Lake State Park. Incredible fun road with great flowers. Not a road to ride fast on unless you're familiar with the turns. Take the scenic turnout and be sure to turn your head and take a look at the Falkenstien Castle.
2. Hwy. 29 From Inks Lake State Park to Llano. Great road, not very challenging. You can look at the eagles nesting about 200 feet from the road seven miles out of Llano.
3. Now go from Llano to Frederisckburg on Hwy 16 (?). There is one of the most popular loops you can take that dips off of the highway and goes into a 'lost' box canyon. For the life of me I can't recall the name, but anyone you find will know it. This little loop will be one of the best parts of your trip. It is truly incredible.
4. Side trip to Luckenbach. You have to go if you have never been. I think it's a law or something.
5. From there do whatever. Hwy 71 back to Marble Falls is pretty good.
I think my next 'vacation ride' will take me out to Garner State Park and around that area. I have found no better riding in Texas than the areas I have mentioned here. But I haven't ridden in Big Bend yet.
Feel free to e-mail me if you need more information on this area.
