Are these batteries worth the expense?

Coach, I don't know if they hold up or not, but at almost three times the expense of a regular deep cycle, I just couldn't justify the added expense. $59 at Academy for the deep cycle vs $159 at Sears for the Optima. :( However, the warranty was better for the Optima.

With batteries, it seems to be the luck of the draw. I've had $40 Wal-mart Everstarts last 5yrs while Diehard's only last 2. I personally have had great results with Red-top Optimas. I believe they have a 5yr pro-rated warranty with 3yr free replacement. I run them in my boat and offroad vehicle. I have completely run the battery down while using accessories and it has fully recharge without damage. They are 100% sealed and can be mounted in any position. They also seem to have more stored power than most battery with the same amps. I found them at Autozone for around $120.

They are sealed dry batteries. They are great for boats that have the batteries up near the bow where they would take a pounding. The regular deep cycles have plates in them that do not hold up with pounding. They also do not vent gas out like acid batteries do. I had one in a 4x4 and it lasted 5 years until I sold the truck.

I have three red tops in my boat that was manufactured in 2002. I keep a 30 minute charge on them every night and have had no problems. Mine are labeled Yamaha, but they were built by Optima. Peace of mind is nice to have.
