I'm about to find myself with a rotating work schedule which will mean some nights I will have to make myself stay up until 6 am in order to get the sleeping pattern right. I've always been interested in building rods and have decided that sure beats the hell out of getting a nintendo to keep me up all night.
Would you guys list the books that you feel are the most comprehensive rod building "Bibles" out there?
I've read several of the posts and have decided: I'm going to start with a kit, practice wrapping on PVC pipe, going to use Ebay a bunch, be patient, etc..
Any hints and tips I've left out are sure welcome.
Thanks,
KGB

The Best books I've found about rodbuilding are "Advanced Custom Rod Thread Art" by Dale Clemens and "Custon Rodbuilding" by Dale Clemens. They were written years ago and don't show all the new methods and newer designs but the basics are the same. These books do an excellent job of teaching you the basics.
I started by finding old rods at garage sales and pawn shops that I could buy for 2 or 3 dollars. I would strip the guides off and rebuild them with a nice butt wrap and a new set of guides and tip top. I still use a couple of these rods that I reworked 15 years ago. I am now doing weaves and custom butt wraps and using new techniques but the basics are still the same.
If I can help you e-mail me.

Another how-to book is "Rod-Building Guide" by Tom Kirkman. It's ~ $15 and is more current as to guide concepts, etc. Clemen's books are very good, just alittle dated on materials. We don't want to lose you off this board, but www.rodbuilding.org (http://www.rodbuilding.org) has tons of info and pics of builds. Patfatdaddy, how 'bout some pics of your weaves? I saw your pics of the looms and wondered how the trout came out. I'm slowly headed towards weaves. Jerry

KGB,

I saw the post and thought i would throw in my 2 cents. The book he mentioned above "Custon Rodbuilding" by Dale Clemens i have read and its a good book. I honestly havent put it to use because i dont have the space yet. I can tell you if your interested in that book, I picked up a used one on ebay for 10bucks. So check it out.

I will try to post some pics but you can't see much detail. I built these two rods for myself. They are both built on Allstar Blanks with Fugi guides and reel seat.

Tried to send pics said my files were to big. Sorry

Is that the same book as "Advanced Custom Rod Buidling" by Dale Clemens?

Yes. I mixed up my titles. It's "Advanced Custom Rodbuilding" and "Custom Rod Thread Art" both by Dale Clemens. I haven't read Tom Kirkman's book but Rodbuilding.org which he host is an excellent website and he does a fantastic job with it. He seems extremely knowledgeable and very congenial. Most of the rodbuilders that frequent that sight are very willing to share their knowledge.
