Where in metro Houston is Danny King's for sale? The Academy in Lake Jackson (nearest to me) doesn't carry it. I am itching to try some.

Gander Mountain's carry it.

Which location? I called both the Sugarland and Spring stores, and both said they were out.

As far as I know they all carry it, they just might be out of stock. I get mine at Gander Mountain in Beaumont.

Gander on 290 has it. Academy carries CJ's and it works just as well.

If your gonna order online I'd suggest ordering SureShot from Benny Roberts www.catfishbait.net (http://www.catfishbait.net)

TX Palerider: would you say that CJ's, Sure Shot, and DK's are about equal?

Also: is there a good catfishing spot on fayette that is accessible from the bank?

Thanks for replying to my question.

Pondstormer,

They all work really well. I think Sure Shot is probably the best, but, it's not available locally so I use the others quite often. I actually prefer Cj's over Danny Kings. But, Danny Kings is usually the most readily available.

As far as fishing from the bank on Fayette, I've never done it, so no help for ya there.

Bank Fishing...
I once came in from a trip, and walked over to the little pier adjacent to the boat launch at oak thicket. There were two guys fishing on the little pier on bottom with live water dogs. In the time it took me to drink a cold one..they caught three keeper catfish and two bass about 16" long, and this was like 11:00 in the morning. I am not a pier fisherman, but was kinda impressed! And yes, they reluctantly released the bass. LOL

PS....I imagine, that if they caught them on waterdogs, other catfish bait would work too!

TX Palerider: Academy in Sugarland had CJ's. It is the worst smelling thing I have ever smelled. As a side note, neither Academy or gander mountain in Sugarland had DK's. There was not a place for it on the shelves. Do they stock it with the rest of the catfish baits (at Gander Mountain)?

Red3fish: thanks for the tip. I may try that sometime. I am interested in fishing around Bastrop because my father lives there. Have you ever fished the pond at Mary Jo Peckham park there in Katy? My wife and I did last week and we caught a nice mess of fish, all channels, all 14-18 inches long. I highly recommend it for a quick fishing trip.

Going to try the pond at Bates Allen park in Kendleton tomorrow.

Just buy whatever kind of nasty cheese bait they have. It all works the same.

I have taken grandkids there to catch some of the 6" perch, but not fished it myself for catfish. I have seen a few nice cats caught out of there, but they kinda encourage catch and release for the adults (although I am certainly not knocking you for keeping them), so I just never fished it for catfish. I usually keep enough in the freezer from Lake Palestine and Fayette. Might have to take grandkids there and let them catch and keep a few cats. They are not quite old enough for a boat trip yet.

If anyone needs a really nice, well maintained park around Katy, this one is certainly nice! Large playground, free putt putt golf, nice pretty good sized lake with a nice pier, ducks for kids to feed, large covered pavillion, some picnic tables scattered around the lake and a walking path around the lake...or jogging path if your younger than me LOL.

They also release some of those 6" yankee trout there every year, about Feb. I went out there year before last and watched and took pics...will have to look for the floppy and post a few pics. Catching them is just not my cup of tea, kinda like a "canned hunt" LOL. Fun to watch the kiddos tho. One guy was using marshmellows for bait and turned around and his little boy of about 3 was eating the bait!! LMAO Glad he wasn't using worms.

Judging from how skinny the fish we caught were (except for the ones that stole our bait before we caught them), the fact that there stomachs were empty except for algae, and the number of fished stocked (TPWD stocks that pond with adult channels every two weeks from March to November, 4000 this year so far, with 10,000 fingerlings stocked in 2006), everyone who catches anything in that pond ought to keep it, just to try to keep the pond in balance. I also noticed that not many people were catching anything. All we kept was the allowable 5 each, for a total of 10, and several people walking by said they had never seen anyone catch that many at one time.

My wife and I alternate where we fish so as not to take too many from one place, but in a sense, I bought those fish with my tax dollars and license fees. We fish the ponds because they are accessible, nearby, and easy to learn.

I apologize for seeming defensive, but I simply do not have many options for fishing opportunities. I don't have a boat, my schedule and my wife's (and kid's) only allow us a few hours to fish a week. I can't afford guided trips or even really long trips to more distant waters. I can't camp for health reasons, so the state-stocked ponds are really the only way I can enjoy fishing and put some fresh caught fish in the freezer.

It is legal and they were put there to catch...it is just that some of us that have other access to fishing have the option of not keeping and leaving the fish there for those that don't or can't. If I take grandkids there, I will guarentee you they will want to keep them! LOL

Glad y'all had a good time.
