Fishing just doesn't get any better. Load your john boat Whitebassfisher and pay your money to launch from Browder's on the east side, throw the net anywhere to get shad, but catch a mullet and cut it into 1 & 1/2" squares for better cats. Keep a rod with a jigging spoon handy and anchor about half way to the cable and right on the edge of quick water on the West side.
Cast some bait out into the swift current in the middle so it will swing along the bottom and put it in the rod holder. Don't even pick it up untill it's bent over double for some chunk meat bluecats.
The whites will school from the West side out towards the middle all day. Everybody was catching those white bass. Little kids with their dad's and grandpaws, rednecks, yuppies, and old folks, everybody was having a goodtime.
After several weeks recuperating from drastic neck surgery I had a fine day catching big white bass and just right size bluecats. We kept about a dozen white bass and 15 blues before I was worn out.

That's fantastic SS. You deserve it after recuperating from the surgery.

The big whites that Karen caught were under the ice I didn't want to get reslimed so there not in the pic. They were a soild 15+". Most of the day we had whites and cats coming in the boat at the same time. The whites would herd shad in to the boat hull and snap em up, you could here them hit the boat. I caught sevearl just dangling my spoon over the side.

A 15 inch white is a nice white. Schooling fish like you got into is the ultimate!

Awesome report. Thanks for sharing. I probably won't be able to get back up there for a week, going to the lease this weekend.

I took my water samples to the lab in Coldspring today and went and sat in the observation deck for lunch. Every 15 or 20 minutes the water would start boiling and birds would flock to the area. What was going on? Also can I get my 21 foot deck boat down and back up either of the Browder ramps?

Thanks,

Wazer, that is white bass blowing up on the shad. It must be worse to be a shad than that to be reincarnated as a fire plug. The whites run up on that shallow self on the west bank where the water is about knee deep and there is a lot of dead weed stems and brushy stuff that the shad are trying to lay low in. The whites root them out and slash them up so there is nowhere to go but up, for the birds to get them.
Launch on the East side middle ramp, pay at Browder's, as the river drops it will be unsafe to launch your boat soon. But right now it's fine, I launch a 19' center console DeepV Redfin with no problem there, but the West bank ramps are very steep and can give you trouble. Launch on the East side as long as you can, but when the river is very much lower than it is now a john boat is what you need.
There are stripers running with those whites too, they make a much bigger hole in the water with a lot of force.
