View Full Version : Leaning Post Advice?

I have a 98 Kenner V-21. It has a worthless swing back seat that I plan on replacing with a leaning post. I went to the boat show yesterday and there were 6-8 guys who make leaning posts. They all looked O.K. but I never boaught a leaning post before.
I want a leaning post with 4 rod holders on back, a grab rail and a foot rest. I live in Spring and don't want to drive more than 1.5 hours. Any advice or recommendations on who to use and features I should get would be appreciated.

What are you going to do with your swing back seat?? I might take it off your hands. How wide is it?? Is it just the frame kind or is it the built in cooler type?

The swing back is the frame kind (fiberglass) and holds a 94 qt cooler I think. I'll have to measure it. When I get ready to get the leaning post, I'll let you know.

Whitey,
I ordered my rig this year with no seat at all, and ran for a few months with nothing while I hunted for my leaning post. I probably looked at 50 different models and talked to 10 different manufacturers before I settled on mine. Just like with boats, the hunt is as much fun as the actual purchase.
I ordered a leaning post from Gary Robertson, owner of Espandre. Gary was courteous, responsive, and his pricing was in line with other manufacturers. His fabrication is very clean, and I've been nothing but happy with my unit.
I ordered mine with two seperate folding foot rests, grab rail, 4 rod holders, and storage under the seat cushion, but the guy can build you whatever you ask for. Gary will custom order the cushion with any color base and piping. He is in Richmond; not too far from you.
Website is pretty decent too. www.espandre.com (http://www.espandre.com/)
Good luck.

I bought my leaning post off of e-bay for less than $ 400.00. Some outfit out of Florida. Shipped to my place of work for $ 40.00.

I bought a leaning/setting seat from tran in Palacious but I dont know who made it.
It looks kinda like the one above but you can set on it as well as lean on it.

You may want to check out custom marine concepts. They gave me a heck of a deal on an elevated console and poling platform.

Whitey, did you make it to the boat show? There are four or five custom aluminum fabricators there. I talked to three of the four I stopped by. At one booth, two guys in stiff shirts wouldn't even acknowledge that we were in their booth so we moved on. I guess we didn't look like the "deep pockets" type. But the other three vendors were friendly and easy to talk to. I liked the sales pitch and prices quoted by Millenium Marine in Kemah. Maybe sometime around the middle of March, I'll try to drag my rig over there and let them have a go at a leaning post also. From what I gather, you could be looking at $750 - 1000. I may start off with the basic post and a storage tray.

Hey Whitey / Mike,
I visited the Millienium booth and had the same experience. Great guy and prices. He's even a member on this board, so......

Any preferences on leaning posts with the plate connecting front and back leg vs those with the smaller foots like the one pictured above? Seems like the plate would be more secure but I don't know whether that's overkill or not.

You may want to check out Larry's Marine Fab in Houston. Located near BW8 on Brittmore. Friend of mine just just had him build a leaning post and a cooler stand for in front of the console. I have seen it and he seems to do good work. Plus its close to Spring.
www.larrysmarinefab.com (http://www.larrysmarinefab.com) is his website.

I took my boat to Espandre to get a leaning post but after Gary showed me an elevated 94 quart ice chest with a thick vinyl covered foam on the lid and wraps around the front slightly that works perfect as a leaning post I changed my mind. It also has separate (2) fold down Rhino coated foot rests. The frame for this elevated chest/seat is high enough that those crate plastic box holders fit underneath and out of the way. Gary says that the Shimano bag will fit under it too and they are easy access to get them out from under. There is no grab bar in the back like the leaning post has but he can still put 2 rocket launcher rod holders on the legs instead of the 4 that the leaning post has. Plus the elevated framed chest is 2 bills cheaper and actually takes up slightly less room than a leaning post.

Belt Sander,
I was out there today also (the green Kenner). I went with the normal leaning post. It just looked to sexy to pass up!

Larry,
do know anyone who makes leaning posts? LOL
I've got some measurements for you on the leaning post we talked about but there's not enough room to construct what I want. I'll stop by Thursday to discuss and pickup the repaired cooler seat I dropped off.
Thanks,
Bob

Whitey, my boat is the Blazer Bay 21. I took it Friday. There was a real nice 18 or 19 Ttiton and a Flats Cat there at the time.

If you don't get the storage under the cushion, you'll wish you had! My boat (Sea Pro) came with a factory leaning post that I really like except for the fact that it had no storage tray. I had a fiberglass one made and I love the extra storage room for odds and ends.
Also, if you plan to keep a cooler slid underneath, you might decide on what cooler so the legs can be spaced apart correctly. Just happened on mine that a 70 qt Icey-Tek long box fit perfectly.

Were the guys in the stiff shirts from Stiffy? We tried to find out about having some work done there about a year ago and got the same treatment. Even after we waited for the "Estimator" to come back from lunch. I will never own a product they make or sell as a result. They were total Aholes.....

I just got my leaning post and front casting deck from Millennium. Jason did a great job on fabrication and installation. He even went the extra mile to fabricate a bolt that fit into a pedastal mount. The nedski is well worth the money.
Thanks Jason,
