View Full Version : starbrite burned my gelcoat!!!

i sprayed spots in my boat with the starbrite hull cleaner and it cleaned them off good, but the next day there was light brown spots everywhere i sprayed the cleaner. is there any other kind of cleaner that will take this off?

Did ya wash it off after putting it on?

yes it was washed off after the application

If it was instant hull cleaner that is made for the outside to remove scum line it is some potent acid. How long did you let it sit? Sounds like acid burns to me...

Try some On and Off from Boat US or West Marine... wear gloves, wipe on and immediately rinse with lots of water. It will clean most any stain, just don't leave it on and don't breath it!!

Oxalic Acid is the active ingredient in most of these products like Starbrite hull cleaner. I use the stuff, and give it some respect, for it is corrosive. If you did not wash off the stuff completely, you may have created an oxalate compound, that has really stained into your fiberglass. Good luck.
