Went to Conroe Saturday morning, arriving around 6:00. Only a few trucks there and two men in kayaks, water was smooth and the temps were just right. I helped a friend with an electrical problem on his cc and he said he would take me for a trip to the bay and I told him That I would rather go to the lake and do some cat fishing, so off we were. His son went with us and the three of us went the the spot that I normally fish and did not have to move from there. I took my handheld for the correct locations and we sat to what was close enough to catch fish. I took my standard two poles, one being my favorite (4-6 lb. one piece 4'6" uglystick) and they took there rigs. After just a few minutes I had put several in the cooler and they were having no luck, I explained that it was the way they had their poles set up was the reason for not catching any fish. The reply was no, we will be just fine so I let them sit and watch me catch fish as they fed them. About thirty minutes into the morning, Many, my friend said that he would use the second pole that I had taken. He almost immediately started catching fish. This was great for me, as this is a friend that has taken me on several occasions to the bays and we fish for trout, we have NEVER caught anything. About one hour into fishing his son still has not caught anything, out of boredom I suppose and probably the fact that he did not really want to be there but it was better than a trip to the nail salon with the girls. I hear him tell his father that this is more fish that they have ever caught, as this was their first trip to fresh water I was really happy to have the bite on. As we all know we can get out there and be prepared as all get out and not catch a thing So I was very pleased to be the man. We had a great time and around 10:30 am we had a limit for two and were on our way home. I have not been fishing in a couple of months due to a new job and boy did I have a great time. Hope everyone else had just as good a time as we.

God Bless you all Kurk

Guess it's a secret.

He's probably afraid we'll all run over and catch all the catfish out of Conroe.

I think that it is different for everyone and every pole, I use as stated before the shortest lightest uglystick that I could find (one piece). I use a 6lb test and a 20 lb leader about18-24 inches. I slide a 1/2 once slip weight on the main line and attach a small swivel to the main line, then tie the mono leader on with the hook. I like this set up because the line can flow freely through the weight and as of my experience the fish suck the liver from the bottom and it is very light to the touch some times I just watch for the slack in the line to change. To me the catches more fish that waiting for a hard strike. I catch a lot of Hybrids this way also, I like the light set up because the fight is why I fish, if I can jerk the fish to the top and skip him across the water it is just no fun. I have caught plenty of sows this way and hope to catch more. If there is a better way I hope that someone will meet me at the lake and lets go have a great time learning. I fish the same way at the bulk heads in March. Only have a 14 ft flat bottom with a 9.9 horse so cant take but one person but I love to fish and don't mind the company. I usually launch at the public ramp at 1097. Don't mind budding up if someone wants. PM me.

I use that same rig for Cats on the Red river. I usually tight line it and look for the Big Hit, Think I'll try it your way next time. Dad uses lighter rods with that same rig and throws out punch bait and just balances it in his hand. i have to Set it down because I'm afraid I might Set the hook to early if I have it in my hand.

I do the same thing about the balance the pole in my hand, I have never lost one yet (knock on wood), but I just like the lite feel and I use a small spinner ( snap shot) so I can set the drag to my liking. I actually think that I catch more fish this way because I tent not to jerk the hook out. My buddy Many caught one Saturday that he fowl hooked in the side as the fish was sucking on the liver and we were able to net the fish, the amazing thing is that the hook was in the side of the fish 5lber and the barb did not even break the skin, I showed this to him as I removed the fish from the net and he was surprized.
I would really like to meet some folks that like to catfish and get to fish with them to learn different techniques.

God Bless,
