I've heard that the thin Shimano oil that comes in the little clear bottle with blue cap is actually mineral oil. Is there any truth to this?

It is pretty much a light mineral oil. As far as the actual composistion of the oil I am not sure of.

Is there anything Bantam1 doesn't know about Shimano?
i did a little oil experiment last week.
With clean bearings out of my Calais and Chronarchs, I tested Rocket Fuel and Hot Sauce against the Shimano mineral oil. There was no appreciable difference in bearing spin rates with the aftermarket oils. I'm sticking with the Shimano stuff that comes with your reel.

A couple years ago, a fellow did a test of all the available reel oils. He posted the results on the unmentionable board (double ewe em eye). The one thing that stood out for me, was that Rocket Fuel had significantly better corrosion protection than most all of the other oils tested. In a freshwater envoroment, this is not really a concern. However on the coast, this may play a bigger factor in choosing a bearing lubricant.
I will try to find that post and put those results over here.

More than you would think...if it comes from us then I know the answer most of the time. We have a great staff in the product development that answers a few questions for me from time to time.
