I use nothing but shimano reels and I am pretty fair at taking them apart and cleaning. I am pretty particular about my reels and making sure they are in top shape when I hit the water. I use the basic shimano grease and a little corrosion X (red can) to spray on all the bearing, but the roller clutch. I was wandering if there is any other type of grease and oil people use on their reels and where you can buy it. I have quite a few of the newer and old curados, but I am mainly a fan of the 87,88, and 89 model Bantam 10SG. (If anyone has any they want to let go of or sell, I would be glad to take them off of you hands. I am especially looking for a Bantam 100 (Silver)). Also I would like to know the proper areas to grease and oil the reels properly. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Shimano white grease in the little tub and reel x (sparingly) is all I've used in the last ten years. No compaints, no problems.

What parts do you oil and what parts do you grease?

Oil the bearings. Unscrew the cast control knob and drop one or two drops of oil in there. Grease the drag washers with Shimano drag grease. Just a thin layer of grease on the drag waher/washers. Put a light layer of that same grease inside the reel on the working parts to protect from salt if ever dunked.

Note: The Bearings should always be oiled so that they spin freely. This makes all the difference in the cast.

Vaseline/petroleum jelly works too.

Oil bearings with 1-2 drops , grease gear teeth and drag washers.

I have heard of some people using grease on the worm gear/screw that controls the guide pawl. I have found this to be the worst thing for salt water fishing. As invaribly, sand will collect on the grease and becomes a grinding mess on the pawl. I only use oil or corrosion X on the worm gear. Then rinse after fishing, dry and apply oil/corrosion X until I am ready to break the reel down for a proper deep cleaning. Oil only on bearings and tension plates, light grease film on drag washers. Exposed parts that are subject to corrosion (ie...anything metal) get a coating from a rag sprayed with corrosion X for a light protective film.

Check the link at the top of this forum. It has directions for how and what to oil/grease.
