I recently fished a 250 Calcutta TE DC....YES the one that cost $400 +++

I guide let me barrow it for the day, and I was pleasntly surprised.

It was paired with a Amercian Rodsmith H3 Titanium rod and I decided to toss a proto-type Corky.

It out-casted everything else on the boat.

I could cast 30 yards into the wind (15-17 mph)....with out back lashing.

It was very smooth, as it should, and it felt like a new reel, eventhough it had been fished for about a month.

It was spooled with mono, but not sure of the lb. test.

I did back-lash it once, testing out the calabrations....you can only loosen it up so much.....hehehe....

After talking with the guide, he said this is not the reel for a guy that fishes 8 - 10 times a year, but if you fish on a regular basis, its something you might want to consider.

The real feature that got me was, you get a service from the factory.

Once you send the real in, it has a 48hr. return policy, so you wont be out of your reel for long.

Concerns: not sure how well it will hold up to the GOM salt water enviorment.
Exspecially the electronics that are under the drilled spool.
Also, the bulkyness of the calcutta is not as nice as the low-profile reels.

Final thoughts: If you want the best, this is it!
If you can afford it, buy it, exspecially if you spend every day off fishing, like myself.

The DC unit is sealed with epoxy and we warranty it against salt water. I have not seen a DC unit corrode to date, including reels from the Gulf States. Thanks for the nice report!

Nice reels; I have some and use them. I wade fish and have infrequently dunked them, and clean the dunked ones well when I come in from fishing.

They work very well with 150 yds of Sufix 20# braid.

I have cleaned a few, and they are holding up very very nicely.

We actually have a couple of the Calcutta DC's on clearance right now at Gander for $299.97. I believe they are the 200 size. Probably will not last long now that I post this.

My wife and I each have one and they are great, they out cast all our other smaller reels and the drag is just so smooth.Flounder better look out when we hit the water in the fall. They are pricey but worth every penny, just save up like we did,you wont regret it.

If you like the DC feature but prefer a low-profile reel you might want to take a look at the Calais DC. Sweet reel.
