View Full Version : Engine ? for a 21' Explorer

My wife finally relented and has allowed me to purchase a boat. My choice is the 21' Explorer TV. The boat presently has a Yamaha 150 VMAX on it. I know I dont want a carburated engine on the boat and in talking with the dealer I have several other options. The Yamaha 150 HPDI, Yamaha 150 4 stroke or the Honda 150 4stroke. I really like the thought of a 4 stroke, no mixing oil, quieter, good fuel economy but the downside is the price. My question. Will the HPDI be a good engine for this boat? Reading Yamahas literature it says it will get up to 35% better fuel economy than EFI engines and I will still get the benefits of 2 stroke performance. I would appreciate your comments. Thanks in advance.

I'd like to have a TRP but that is not in the budget. I am still leaning 4 stroke and have heard from several on the board about their Honda's. Was just wanting to know what people thought of the HPDI.

The HPDI will come close to the fuel milage of a 4 stroke. Plus it's lighter. My choice would be the HPDI.

I would personally go with the either the HPDI or the yamah 4 stroke. Reason being that I have worked on both engines. The Honda's alloy is not built for saltwater period. I know that a lot of people have had good luck and are still having good luck but on the Honda's once something starts going wrong it all goes wrong. For the fact that when you start taking it apart everything is corroded up worse then any other outboard. After a while the Honda's paint and alloy will start bubbling up, if you will. Pretty much being that the paint will just chip off. I'm not bashing anyone or anything for having Honda's just my personal opinion of them and what I have seen.

I have the 150 VMax/Carburated model. Eats up the gas!! I would go with the TRP or the 150 4-Stroke.
I bought my boat off the floor at the boat show three years ago - thought I'd get a better deal taking that route. Otherwise, I would have gone with a better motor.
However, excellent choice of boat model (Explorer).

My choice would be the 150 HPDI, Ive had one for going on 3 years now and it has been a super engine, no problems at all. Windjammer

Thanks for the replies. I ordered the boat with the Honda 150 on it. Would have gone with the HPDI but saved $$$ going with the Honda. Its a 2004 model still in the box. The HPDI was a 2005. I don't think I could go wrong with either engine so it came down to the dollars.

You will be happy with the Honda....and you will smile every time you walk down the isle at the store and see that 2 cycle oil.
