I have two of the new Citicas I really like the reels but I can't seem to get the casting performance out of them. Brand new from the box both of them just felt like they would get to a distance and stop going. They have 12lb berkley on them. I have tried all combinations of different settings I could think of. The silver knob has been loosened way up. It has gotten better since I took some ones advise and removed 2 pink weights across from each other and set the other 4 weights on. I am using a Falcon CostalXG Medium Popper rod 7'. I can toss an artificial better than bait but it still seems to fall short. I could be the rod or me I am not blaming the reels just looking for advise. Thanks

Try it with no brakes. Push the brake collars in (to the off position) and see how it works. The brake collars/weights are designed to slow the spool down to help prevent backlashes.

When I bought mine last week, the guys at Sportsman's Warehouse said that they come out of the box fairly dry, and suggested giving it a light oil job before using it, which I did.
Using a 7' Laguna Medium Inshore Special, I was able to cast a 1/2oz spinnerbait, and some lighter crankbaits 20 - 30 yards while sitting in a kayak yesterday. I really could not load up the rod on my backswing like I could if I was wading, or fishing from a bay boat, so I know I can get more distance when I'm standing up. The only time I backlashed was when I either hit the boat on my back swing, or put a weightless worm on a hook.

Matt I tried it with no brakes but it backlashed VERY easy. One brake out was the best I could get with that set up. Now the 4 out with two completly off is the best. Any less and backlash gets pretty easy.
I did not oil the reel when I got it because I thought oil slowed it down. All I have done so far is lighly rinse afer use they have been used ~10 times.
Thanks for the help.

I just used the oil that came in the box with the reel. Applied a light coating and spread it around with a q-tip. That absorbs some of the excess, but leaves the light film on there.

Look at the maintenance links on the top of this page. Remove the spool and clean all the excess oil from the spool, spool shaft and from the center of the pinion bearing. This will improve the casting performance. Adding oil will only slow the spool down.

ckill- if you can take the reel apart and remove the bearings that the spool runs in, use lighter fluid or naptha and flush them out throughly, ( put in small medicine bottle with the fluid and soak for awhile the shake good , you will be suprised at what will come out of a new bearing) remove from fluid and dry out, apply a drop of reeel oi; of your choice, i use rem oil or hot sauce , or rocket fuel apply a drop to the bearing an using a blunted pencil or a sharpen wood dowel in the shaft hole rotate the bearing until you feel it smooth out, set the bearing down an put 1 drop of oil on it, do the other one repeating process, the oil will siphon thru the bearing, after you have done both, use a swab an remove any excess ,install them back in reel. try this an see if it doesn't help out.
