drag problem

I have a tld15 and acharter special that have the same problem. If you tighen the drag enough to have decent drag the spool will not freespool well. If you loosen it enough to freespool well there is almost no drag. Sugesstions???
I have lots more tlds and charter specials that are great.

Are you using a drag scale to check the drag pressure? The reels are only designed to have so much drag at strike. Anything over this setting will not allow the reel to drop completely into freespool. Max strike drag on the TLD15 is 15 pounds for example.

no drag scale other than my touch and I have another TLD15 and charter special that are fine. By touch these two are less than 5 lbs of drag. 15 lbs of drag is a heck of a lot, even 10 would be fine.

You either have the pressure washer configuration wrong or the washer on the top of the drag plate has flateneed out. The pinion support bearing could also be rusted.


I advise you to send the reel in for repair.
