View Full Version : TLD 25 problems

I've always taken what I thought was good care of all my reels. I've not been a big shimano person but do have a few reels.
Is it normal for the body on a TLD to fail after a few (3) years? I don't use the reel very often, but do clean regularly. None of the other brands with similar setups seem to have these problems... or at least in my case. The corrosion has been much more rapid, and lead to much more brittle parts.
What gives?
Thanks,
Chris.

The body is made out of Graphite so I do not see why you are having corrosion issues. The TLD25 series reels have not been known to have bady failures unless you are harnessed in and are not holding onto the rod.
Please explain in more detail what is wrong with your reel and I will do my best to help you.

The body was not corroding, yet it gave under pressure when trying to open it up. I was breaking the reel down to clean up the drag a bit, and notice that the opposite side of the reel where the main shaft sits with a pin holding it in place was damaged.
The kept the reel from properly engaging into free spool.
The corrosion was is just a general observation. It seems to suffer from it more than my other reels. Maybe different grades of stainless?

My first experience with TLD's was years ago. Like when they first came out. I had quick failures on both of them. The guy I got them from made no effort to help me and said I fished them too hard.
I know I should have gone to Shimano direct, but I was somewhat ******.
I have always avoided Shimanos because of that. I know pretty unfair.
Now I work at the new Bass Pro In So. Ca. I have been working with the new shimanos because i was forced too. I think they are crazy good reels and even think I might try another TLD but in a 2-speed. You would think with the millions trhey pay us I could afford a nice gold reel but I can't. The New TLD's are very impressive and made well. How would I know? I the guy who used to get calls from Boeing and Lookheed in the middle of trhe night to solve Mfg problems. And the Shimano people are all great.
So I take back anything I have said in the past.

I have never seen this spot break before. Send the reel to us for repairs and we will take care of it for you.
