We have discussed the best ways to clean baitcasters but what about the spinnung reels? I have more problems cleaning these than any others. I opened up my spinner and the large gear inside the body looks like it needs to be replaced and there is considerable more grease in the inside then the baitcasters. So what is the best method, i like to use the spinner in the surf when i throw live bait and it is rough, no backlasher, and when i take the kid to the pier at night and I just want to pitch the bait freeliner shrimp at night

To be honest the best thing is to lightly rinse and dry like the casting reel. Do not remove the gears to clean and service the reel. The gears develop a wear pattern and if this is disturbed then the reel will not feel smooth again.
I strongly suggest that you have the spinning reels proffessionaly serviced once a season. If the reel has a maintenance port do not fill this with any type of lube you can get your hands on. All that is needed is one single drop of oil every 4-6 months of use.
The line roller area is something that should require frequent service especially in the salt water. Remove the line roller and bearings and clean all the salt, grease/oil from this area. Add a drop of oil to the bearing(s) and reassemble.
Once again DO NOT spray the reels with oil. This will ruin the gears and cause drag problems and anti reverse bearing problems. If you like the smell and feel of Corrosion X or WD40 then you can spray it onto a rag and wipe the exterior of the reel.
