View Full Version : Trinidad 20, slipping???

I picked up a Trinidad 20 recently for a Cabo trip. The anti-reverse or drag seems to be slipping. When I store the reel/rod, I would tightened the drag
so I could tightened the line up. About 1 hr. later, the line would have slack in it. Is this normal? It is bothering me. I have Curado and Calcutta and do not have this problem.

I mated this reel with a Trevala jigging rod, what a great settup!

Thanks in advance,
BJ

The drag could have been slipping. If you have an anti reverse fail then you would know on the first fish you hooked. It sounds like the drag washers have too much grease on them. Especially in the heat of Cabo the grease can change viscosity and "slip".

Do you have braided line on the reel. If so it may be turning on the spool. I have seen this happen several times when the spool of braid is not backed up with at least a little mono.

Trinidads have a post that you can tie the braided line to. This will prevent the braid from slipping on the spool

If it's a drag problem check out the free upgrade from Shimano.
It comes with a new side plate, drive shaft, and drag press plate.

Thanks!

I bought it in Late April '07 so most likely it has the new drag setup. I did spooled it with 80# PowerPro without backing, tied to post.

Bantam - Do you recommend cleaning all the grease off the drag washer?

Thanks again!

You stripped the gear by overpowering the line. Common mistake.

Thanks,

haven't caught anything over 20# on it yet, does not feel that the gear is stripped.
The grease on the drag washer sounds like a likelihood since it is rather a new reel.

No DO NOT remove all the grease from the reel. Check out the link on the sticky at the top of the page. There are directions for how to service the drags correctly. This is a link to the maintenance guide for the Torium and Trinidad reels.

Maybe its nothing, but the Trini 40/50 models have a double pawl antireverse to prevent this occurrence w/ heavier braids.

Trinidad problem is fix, too much grease on the drag washers.

BTW, it is a Trinidad 30.
